Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dunedin City has three offshore islands. Which of these is not one of them?

Answer: Black Island

White Island and Green Island are named obviously because of their colour. Green Island has vegetation growing on it and White Island is a bird colony and covered in guano. Taieri Island is named because it sits beyond the estuary of the Taieri River mouth.

It is, unlike the other two islands, accessible on foot at low tide. There's no island called Black Island anywhere near Dunedin City.
2. Auckland City sits on a field of volcanoes all thought to be extinct or dormant. How many volcanoes are there in Auckland?

Answer: 53

Auckland sits on or around 53 volcanoes the biggest and most recent eruption being Rangitoto Island. It erupted 600 years ago and spewed out more lava than all the other Auckland volcanoes combined.
3. The ship Dundonald was wrecked on which desolate, uninhabited New Zealand island?

Answer: Disappointment Island

Disappointment Island is a desolate and isolated island in the Subantarctic Auckland Island group in the Great Southern Ocean south of New Zealand. On the 7th of March 1907 the Dundonald sailed into a storm and was forced onto rocks on Disappointment Island.

They were eight km away from the larger Auckland Island where there was food and shelter where they could await rescue. The sailors made a crude boat from branches of the few trees on Disappointment Island and three men made it to shore on Auckland Island but were unable to locate the depot.

In a new crude boat, four men landed on Auckland Island and were able to find the depot and a better boat but without sails. They made sails out of their clothing and rescued the other survivors. The castaways were rescued after seven months.
4. Bluff, a town on the south Coast of South Island, is often incorrectly thought to be the southernmost point of South Island. What is the southern most point called?

Answer: Slope Point

Slope Point sits south of the settlements of Waikawa and Haldane on the southwest edge of the Catlins district. There is no access by road. It is a 20 minute walk across a sheep farm. It is closed to the public in lambing season. It is 70 Km to the west of Invercargill New Zealand's southernmost city.
5. Which small Otago town is known by name to many New Zealanders because of a disease affecting a number of people in it?

Answer: Tapanui

Many people in the settlement Tapanui were affected by Tapanui flu which has since been known as chronic fatigue syndrome. Deer stalking and trout fishing are popular pastimes. It sits between the bottom of the Blue Mountains and Pomohaka River. The main street and an old timer mill were used as sets in the movie "Pete's Dragon".
6. Which New Zealand town is known by few people other than the town residents to have wild goats freely roaming the town?

Answer: Blackball

Since 2014 the small West Coast town Blackball has had a gang of 16 goats hiding out during the night then coming out during the day eating people's gardens and moving on to the next. Due to them breeding the numbers increased causing more havoc. There were talks of shooting them to control the problem but it was halted due to the fact it wasn't able to be determined if the goats were regarded as pets. Most residents of the town consider them to be lovely goats and don't really see it as a problem.
7. Which tiny South Island town is reputed to have one of the most haunted hotels in New Zealand?

Answer: St Bathans

The old gold town St Bathans is a tiny settlement in central Otago. The Vulcan hotel, the only remaining pub in town, boasts a poltergeist known as Rose. People have reported many strange happenings such as lights turning on and off, kettles boiling, sudden drops in temperature seeing apparitions and more. Some male guests have also been awoken with the feeling of being throttled.
8. A bronze statute of a sheep dog is on the shores of which lake?

Answer: Lake Tekapo

Lake Tekapo is a lake fed from the north end by a river descending from the Southern Alps. It lies close to lake Pukaki and Lake Ohau in the McKenzie Basin in South Canterbury. Contrary to popular belief the statue of a New Zealand sheepdog is not a statue of the dog owned by New Zealand folk hero James McKenzie. Because it's in McKenzie Country, the same breed as his dog Friday and that McKenzie lived in the district now bearing his name is widely believed to be fact.

It was in reality a homage to the dogs who help local farmers with their sheep herding, however a monument to McKenzie's dog is a nice idea.
9. What is the northernmost permanently human inhabited settlement in New Zealand's territory?

Answer: Raoul Island

Although Cape Reinga is in the extreme north of New Zealand's North Island, it is a common misconception it is the northernmost point. Raoul Island 1100 km north of North Island has a constantly manned station on it. Nugent Island a small distance north is New Zealand's northernmost point but is small and only a home to sea birds.
10. Where is the westernmost point of New Zealand's Territory?

Answer: Cape Lovitt in the Auckland Islands

Although West Cape would suggest it is the most westerly point, Cape Maria van Dieman is both the northernmost point of North Island and western most point of the largest three islands. Cape Lovitt on Auckland Island 465km south of South Island is further west than Cape Maria van Dieman. Like many of the offshore islands not many people visit it.

There are no towns or any commercial premises of any kind and its inclement weather doesn't make it a popular holiday destination.
