Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which National Park has a north and south rim, with a big hole in between?

Answer: The Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is one of the most beautiful National Parks in the United States. You can actually get a few different views of the canyon. The north rim is covered in beautiful trees, as you look down in the canyon. The south rim is a breathtaking view of the deep canyon.

You can visit one of many visitor centers; one of my personal favorites is the "watchtower". You can climb all the way to the top and enjoy the overlook.

In order to hike and camp in the bottom of the canyon, you must apply and get a permit - one of the hardest permits to get, by the way. If you're just looking at hiking in and out the same day, no permit is needed. Just remember this. Hiking down is optional. Hiking up is mandatory.
2. Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey wrote, "Take It Easy" about this town in Arizona, while the Eagles made it famous. What town am I referring to?

Answer: Winslow

Right along Route 40 you can find the small but popular town of Winslow, Arizona and yes, "such a fine sight to see...". When you stop in the town you'll spot a few things, including the famous red truck and a monument of the song with a cowboy "Standin' on the Corner". Of course everyone wants their picture taken there. We waited till dark and stood in the middle of the street, of course waiting for no traffic.

There's also a 9/11 monument on the outskirts of town, along with a historic railroad just outside the city too.
3. If you head way south in Arizona, pretty much on the border of Mexico you can find this National Monument. This is the only place that you can find this certain cactus in the United States. What NM is this in Ajo, Arizona?

Answer: Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument

The Organ Pipe Cactus is breathtaking to view. It's like all sorts of arms coming out of the top of the cactus. You can either drive or walk around the 517 square miles of this National Monument. I opted to drive one of the 4WD roads. The rangers said to always be aware of visitors from Mexico and not to stop for them. Not even to give them water. Yes, I also did see one person in the area and didn't stop but reported to the ranger after the fact.
4. This National Park is far from small. You can see so many things along the drive through the park. You'll see the Painted Deserts, Newspaper Rock, Blue Mesa and even a portion of Route 66. What park am I driving through?

Answer: Petrified Forest National Park

You can see these and of course, petrified rocks as well. The rumor is if you pick up a rock and take it home, that you'll have bad luck until it's returned. One in particular is the Agate Bridge, which is one long log, over 100 feet long! All petrified and gorgeous!

You can also visit the Painted Desert Visitor Center where you can go though the back and take a little nature walk.

The overlooks have amazing views. Painted Desert is like a painting with many different colors from a paint brush. The Blue Mesa is another area that has numerous colors in the small hills.
5. I love Arizona, but my favorite part of Arizona is the northernmost point by Utah. I love driving along route 389. There's a little National Monument just along the road, in Fredonia. What is the name of this National Monument?

Answer: Pipe Spring NM

All of these places are within a couple hours of Pipe Springs and yes, Zion is a National Park, not a monument. I was lucky enough to get a tour of the Pipe Springs from the rangers. It's actually a very interesting story about the Latter Day Saints and the struggles that they had with trying to adapt to their lifestyle. The pipes brought water right to their home and they show how they set up the system. It's funny, we turn a faucet on, while in other times it wasn't so easy.

I will highly recommend not only stopping here, but going north to my favorite town in Utah also, Kanab, Utah. Just be careful, they really make sure you're going the speed limit. I wasn't so careful once!
6. When I visited this National Park by Tucson, they were having a birthday party for one of the oldest ones there. What park was established in 1994?

Answer: Saguaro National Park

It was unknown exactly how old the cactus was, but they were celebrating the giant saguaro cactus in front of the visitor center that day. As we drove though the park, the sun was setting, and we could view the beautiful tall cacti all over the park. When I think of old western movies, I think of the saguaro cactus.

While you're down in this area may I also suggest a side trip to Old Tucson to see the fake gunfighters.
7. Three of these places in Arizona had places carved out of rock and stones for the Indians to live in. Which place does NOT involve Cliff Dwellings?

Answer: Casa Grande Ruins National Monument

Tonto, Walnut Canyon and Navajo are all cliff dwellings that were carved out for homes for people. The Casa Grande Ruins is a type of monument just south of Phoenix. It's covered in graffiti and was finally saved and made into a national monument and protected from being ruined by the public any further.

Navajo NM was lived in by the Anasazi people many years ago and is located in Shinto, Arizona.

Tonto NM was occupied by the Salado people in the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries. This monument is in Roosevelt, Arizona.

You can take a nice hike around Walnut NM outside of Flagstaff to see the dwellings of the Sinagua people.
8. If you want to see beautiful chocolate falls and pretend you're Willy Wonka, you need to head here in Arizona. What waterfall am I thinking of by Flagstaff?

Answer: Grand Falls

I have been to this area when it was just flowing with brown gorgeous waters and I have been to this area when it was as dry as a bone. You need to plan your trip for right time, after a long rain is perfect. Then drive out and watch these waters! The Grand Falls, or as some people call them, Chocolate Falls, is just northeast of Flagstaff, Arizona. The road isn't too bad, but if driving in a car, drive slow!

The falls are 185 feet tall and you can hike to the bottom of the falls. Make sure to bring a camera, you won't want to miss this sight! The water actually comes from the White Mountains of Arizona and flow down through the Little Colorado River. If you're heading to Flagstaff, do not miss this opportunity.
9. Can you find the London Bridge in Arizona?

Answer: Yes

Yes, a true story and in the town of Lake Havasu City. The bridge was originally in London and was taken apart and moved to Arizona in 1967. Many people think that the Tower Bridge in London is actually the London Bridge, but nope, it's not.

If you have some time, stop by for some ice cream and walk along the Colorado River and see the famous London Bridge. I can almost guarantee you won't hear, "London Bridge is falling down...".
10. If you are looking to find the Airplane Boneyard in Arizona, which Air Force base would you go to?

Answer: Davis-Monthan AFB

Actually only two of these Air Force bases are in Arizona. This boneyard at Davis-Monthan is actually the largest of all boneyards in the United States. You may be lucky enough to take a tour of the facility, but if not, you can also drive by and see the airplanes in the distance.

I have not had an opportunity to visit the boneyard but now that I know tours are available, I will check this out for sure.

If you're still asking yourself, what is a boneyard? It's where all the planes go when they are 'too old' or "stored'. Some of the planes are used for parts while sometimes people purchase other planes. You and I might buy a used car, while someone might want to tinker around with a used plane.
