Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the small town of Metropolis stands an imposing 25-foot bronze statue of Superman. He overlooks a museum built in his honor, and is attended by Superman regalia throughout his surroundings. In what state is Metropolis?

Answer: Illinois

Metropolis is right next to the Illinois-Kentucky border. Though the museum is a little tacky, it's a nice stop for Superman fans.
2. Near the remote Nebraska town of Alliance stands a majestic monument forever linking the faith of humanity's ancient past with the technology of our present. What classical edifice is reconstructed at this site?

Answer: Stonehenge

"Carhenge" is a replica of Stonehenge made from junked automobiles. Though the citizens of Alliance resisted its influence at first, it is now grudgingly accepted as the town's star attraction.
3. In Fairview, KY stands a monument marking the birthplace of Confederate States of America President Jefferson Davis. In what form did Davis' admirers build this tribute?

Answer: A 350-odd foot tall concrete obelisk similar to the Washington Monument

When I visited this monument, no one in the nearby community where I inquired had ever heard of it. Since the obelisk is clearly visible for several miles, I continue to find this astounding. Then again, the tower has been under some sort of construction or renovation for years, so I guess it was bound to fade from memory.
4. Kansas is known as the "Sunflower State", and the good people of Goodland, KS have embraced this designation by erecting what monument?

Answer: An 80-foot easel supporting a giant reproduction of Van Gogh's painting "Three Sunflowers in a Vase"

This prodigious construction rises from the nearly flat plains of western Kansas just off Interstate 70.
5. Nestled in the Alamo Heights area of San Antonio is a fascinating, if highly specialized, art gallery. What household necessity provides the medium for the artist/owner's creativity?

Answer: Toilet seats

The 612 decorated toilet seats in evidence (as of January 2002) are the work of Barney Smith, who has been doing this sort of work for over thirty years. Many of the seats tell a story, including one dedicated to Barney's eye surgery.
6. In Lake Arthur, NM, just south of UFO Mecca Roswell, is a shrine to an image of Jesus as it spontaneously appeared in 1977. On what surface did this representation of the Christ manifest itself?

Answer: On a tortilla

This once-renowned image of Jesus on a Tortilla is still on display in a small shed in Maria Rubio's backyard, and is said to be the focal point of several miraculous healings. Unfortunately, the image itself has faded in the New Mexico heat.
7. The Fremont district of Seattle is known for its odd, off-center offerings, including yoga studios, organic espresso shops, and an annual Summer Solstice parade featuring many participants naked but for their body paint. A large, well-crafted bronze statue of what (mostly) discredited leader can be seen on its main boulevard?

Answer: Vladimir Lenin

The statue was purchase from a city in Slovakia after being knocked down in that country's break from Communism in 1989. It is currently for sale for $150,000!
8. Driving across Arizona, one sees a plethora of signs advertising "The Thing" off Interstate 10 east of Tuscon. When one finally goes to confront "The Thing", which of these antiquities will NOT be discovered on the gauntlet one must run to come into its presence?

Answer: A retired atom smasher from nearby Los Alamos

"The Thing" itself is a somewhat anti-climactic end to this kitschy dime museum. I'd tell you what it is, but I wouldn't want to spoil the "surprise". Send me a message if you just cannot wait to venture to Tuscon yourself.
9. In the town of Lake George in upstate New York, near Interstate 87, is an eclectic park depicting many children's fairy tales. It also features a diving horse show and a number of retrofitted statues. What name is given this transcendent place?

Answer: Magic Forest

Magic Forest has been in continuous operation since 1963. In addition to fairy tale figures, one can also find statues of Uncle Sam, Santa Claus, and a fiberglass caricature of Alfred E. Neuman waving an axe!
10. The central Illinois town of Arcola is like a dream come true for seekers of roadside oddities. Not only is it home to the venerable (if kitschy) Rockhome Gardens, it is also the proud settlement of many Amish families whose horses and buggies can be seen trotting and rolling down the local highways. In the middle of town is a monument to what other group of societal nonconformists?

Answer: Hippies

The "Hippie Memorial" was constructed in the 1990s by the now-departed Bob Moomaw. It is counterbalanced by a memorial to both Pearl Harbor and September 11 victims a few blocks away.
