Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of London's most complete park, with playground, gardens, watersports, picnic area, etc... ?

Answer: Regents Park

Designed by John Nash in the early 1800s, Regents Park was originally meant to be the grounds for a country villa for the prince regent. He did not build a villa on this location, and Regents Park was opened to the public in 1838.
2. Marble Arch was built to be a part of Buckingham Palace.

Answer: True

Also designed by John Nash, Marble Arch was built in 1828. Located in the Oxford Street area of London, Marble Arch was originally supposed to be a grand gate to the Buckingham Palace grounds. But the monarchy never pushed the Buckingham Palace gardens out so far.
3. Who designed St. Paul's Cathedral?

Answer: Sir Christopher Wren

Designed and started nine years after the Great Fire Of London, St. Paul's Cathedral sits on the grounds of an original Medieval church which was destroyed by the flames. St. Paul's Cathedral holds the crypts of both Lord Nelson and the Duke Of Wellington.

Interesting tidbit - Sir Christopher Wren designed the building to have clear windows, but stained glass windows were inserted instead. It was only after the windows were destroyed during the bombings of WWII that the stained glass windows were replaced with the intended clear glass.
4. Who purchased Westminster Abbey from the monks of Westminster Abbey in 1536?

Answer: King Henry VIII

Westminster Abbey was built in stages between the 11th to the 19th centuries. Famous people buried there are Geoffrey Chaucer, Charles Darwin and Isaac Newton.
5. The original intended name for the statue of Eros in Piccadilly Circus was `Protector Of The Monarchy'.

Answer: False

The statue, sculpted by Sir Albert Gilbert and unveiled in 1893 was originally titled `The Angel Of Christian Charity'. Piccadilly Circus is the hub of London. Most of London's theaters are located within a few hundred yards of here.
6. Whose seventeen foot likeness sits atop a one hundred and eighty five foot high column in Trafalgar Square?

Answer: Lord Nelson

The square was named and laid out within the years 1829 to 1841. It was so named to commemorate Lord Nelson's victory at the Battle Of Trafalgar. Four giant bronze lions sit at the base of the large column and statue.
7. The Tower of London was built during the reign of Henry VIII.

Answer: False

The Tower of London is much older than that. It was built during the reign of William the Conqueror, who sent for building bricks all the way from Normandy. In its time, the Tower Of London has been a fortress, a prison, and a palace. It is currently London's most visited museum, and it houses the crown jewels.
8. Under whose reign did Buckingham Palace become the official main home for the English sovereign?

Answer: Queen Victoria

Originally built as the home of the Duke Of Buckingham in 1703, Buckingham Palace was remodeled both for King George IV, and again in 1913. Crowds gather outside the gates of the palace daily to watch the changing of the guard.
9. Big Ben was named for Sir Benjamin Moore.

Answer: False

Big Ben was named for Sir Benjamin Hall, the first Commissioner of the Works. The present building was constructed between the years of 1840 and 1860 on the site of the original Palace Of Westminster. The designers were Sir Charles Barry and A.W. Pugin.

Interesting Note - Big Ben is the name of the bell within the tower, not the tower itself. Also the tower holds a prison cell within it which has not been used since 1880.
10. Where do the coronations take place in London?

Answer: Westminster Abbey

Built by Edward the Confessor in the 11th Century, all coronations have taken place in Westminster Abbey since his reign. Most of Britain's monarchs are buried within Westminster Abbey. Also buried here are Britain's most famous poets and the Tomb Of The Unknown Warrior.
