Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Breton flag consists of two colours. Can you name them?

Answer: blanc et noir (white and black)

The eleven ermines on the canton stand for the eleven types of Celtic people living in Brittany (Bretagne). The black and white stripes stand for the different dialects of Bretonne and French. You see the flags, for some reason, mostly in "labour disputes" (strikes).
2. Quiberon is which type of geographical feature?

Answer: a peninsula

Quiberon is the home to the best canned tuna in the world (at least to me).
3. Which of the below is a city in western France, the capital of Loire-Atlantique Department, on the Loire River and near the Bay of Biscay?

Answer: Nantes

Nantes is the capital of modern-day Loire-Atlantique but was previously the capital of Brittany. A reorganisation of regional entities saw Nantes 'leave' her home of Brittany to become part of Loire-Atlantique. The city is still thought of by many to be the capital of Brittany.
4. "Le musée de la résistance Bretonne" (the museum of the Bretonne resistance) is in this city.

Answer: Saint Marcel

I had tons of fun there, much more fun than the D-Day beaches' museums in Normandy! It's so interactive! It's mainly outdoors and rustic.
5. The interactive museum in Quimper about 17th century liquor making is known by the French name: Le musée de _______.

Answer: l'Alambic

Alambic is a cool museum. I was lucky that I saw the machine working! Mairie means Mayorie (Mayor's residence) in French (hope you didn't fall for that one). Département Breton is one of three art museums in the province. Faïence is a museum full of artifacts of Vikings and Celts who first settled in the region of Brittany (Bretagne).
6. Name the four Breton-speaking dioceses in Brittany.

Answer: Trégor, Léon, Cornouaille and Vannes

There are five French dioceses and four Breton. They are as follows:

French- Dol, Nantes, Rennes, St. Malo and St. Brieuc
Bretonne: Trégor (Tregerieg dialect), Léon (Leoneg dialect), Vannes (Gwenedeg dialect) and Cornouaille (Kerneveg dialect).

The Breton flag consists of five black bands and four white ones, which stand for the preceding.
7. The highest point of the province, le Roc'h Trédudon, is how many metres high?

Answer: 387 metres

The 387 metre mountain could only be explored by car (if nothing else) up a bumpy dirt road. It's a good thing for the environment, but a bad thing if you are the kind of person that likes everything fancy and/or technological (fortunately, not me!).
8. There is a famous collection of megalithic stone sites in Brittany. What are they called?

Answer: Carnac stones

Every rock is about one metre high, all aligned in rows and quite elegant. Try not to think of them as gravestones, because they are NOT graves, as no skeleton has been found under any rock.
9. Concarneau was a quite different little town in Brittany--that is, only because it's completely ... what?

Answer: walled

It's sometimes called the "walled city" or "la ville murée". Over the years, Concarneau has become a great source of income!
10. Okay, let's end it up with some dessert: le Kouign Amann is a yeast cake (not the capital of Jordan). What are its main traditional ingredients?

Answer: Dough, butter, sugar

The yeast cake that is slightly burnt on both sides is about 5cm tall and 20cm in diametre. To me, it tastes even better than the flapjacks of Montreal. I should have taken the recipe!
