1. Where are the oldest European structures in Australia to be found?

Answer: West Wallabi Island - WA

Survivors of the Dutch merchant ship Batavia built a fort on West Wallabi Island (yes that is the spelling) in 1629 after being shipwrecked. Under-merchant Jeronimus Cornelisz led a mutiny that resulting in more than 120 deaths among the survivors, he was captured, tortured, forced to sign a confession, then had his hands chopped off before being hanged after those left were rescued by a search party.
2. What is the youngest of the Australian state capital cities?

Answer: Adelaide

Adelaide founded in 1836 under Governor John Hindmarsh and named for the Queen Consort of William IV, it is the capital of South Australia which was the only colony not to receive direct convict settlement from Britain. Other capitals cities were founded: Sydney 1788, Hobart 1804, Brisbane 1824, Perth 1829 and Melbourne 1835.
3. Where would you find the highest vertical sea cliffs in Australia?

Answer: Cape Pillar - Tas

At 270 metres the sea cliffs of Cape Pillar are the tallest in Australia. The weathered dolerite columns are the last point on the Tasman Coastal Trail walk and have features named Tornado Ridge, Hurricane Gully and Purgatory Hill, testament to their full exposure to the wild Southern Ocean and its weather.

Answer: Lord Howe Island - NSW

World heritage inscribed Lord Howe Island at 31 degrees 33 minutes south has some of the most southerly coral reefs in the world. Dominated by Mount Lidgbird and Mount Gower the island is part of the state of New South Wales about 600 kilometres northwest of Sydney.

Answer: Mawson Peak

Located on Heard Island in the Southern Ocean, Mawson Peak at 2,745 metres is taller than Mount Kosciusko at 2,228 metres. Mawson Peak along with Macquarie Island are the only two active volcanoes on Australian territory.
