Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What height must a Scottish mountain be to be classified as a Munro?

Answer: 3,000 feet

The Munros were first catalogued in the late 1890's by Sir Hugh Thomas Munro, Bart., of Lindertis. The total number of Munros has fluctuated over the years as surveying and mapping techniques have improved.
2. Which is the highest Munro?

Answer: Ben Nevis

Known to climbers all over the UK as "The Ben", Ben Nevis is a mountain of dual character. On its south side it is rounded and vegetated, and a wide, eroded track takes tourists to the summit. On its north side huge rocky cliffs and gullies provide some of the most technical climbing in the world.
3. Which Munro is furthest south?

Answer: Ben Lomond

Ben Lomond is only a few miles from Glasgow, Scotland's most populous city, and is therefore immesnely popular for day trips, and there is a wide and obvious tourist track to the summit. The Cobbler, which is further south, and almost as popular, is not high enough to be a Munro.
4. One Scottish island has twelve of the Munros, grouped in one fabulous black mass of gabbro and basalt - name the island.

Answer: Skye

The roughness of gabbro makes for some wonderful rock climbing, and Skye is a mecca for the sport. On one of the Skye Munros, Sron na Ciche, you'll find The Cioch Buttress, where Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramierez (Sean Connery) taught Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert)the skills of sword fighting in the film "Highlander".
5. The Cairngorm plateau, in the eastern Highlands, is no place for the faint-hearted in winter, when conditions are near-Arctic. But Cairn Gorm is not the highest mountain in the Cairngorms - which is?

Answer: Ben Macdui

Cairn Gorm is the sixth highest Munro, but only fifth highest in its own area. In the late 19th century, when there was some doubt about whether Ben Nevis was higher, locals considered building a huge cairn atop Ben Macdui to win it the position of highest mountain in Britain, but their plans were not carried through.
6. Close to the Royal Family's Scottish estate at Balmoral, this Munro features in a book by Prince Charles, entitled "The Old Man of ********* ". What is the name of the mountain.

Answer: Lochnagar

Lochnagar (which translates from the Gaelic as "little loch of laughter / noise") is also known as Beinn nan Ciochan ("hill of the paps"). Prince Charles wrote his book in 1980 to raise money for the Prince's Trust.
7. Ouside of Skye, there is one more offshore Munro, Ben More. On which island is it?

Answer: Mull

Ben More translates as "Big Hill" or "Great Mountain", and there are two Ben Mores in the list of Munros, this one on the Isle of Mull, and one in the Balquihidder Hills of Perthshire.
8. There is only one Munro where to reach the true peak you have to rock-climb, for about 150 feet. The rock pillar which forms the peak is called the Inaccessible Pinnacle, but of which mountain is it the summit?

Answer: Sgurr Dearg

This is one of the few Munros that Sir Hugh Munro never climbed, probably because at that time it was not classified as a Munro. It is at the heart of the Black Cuillins, the wonderful group of mountains on the Inner Hebridean island of Skye.
9. The Five Sisters of Kintail is a five-mile ridge of mountains north of Glen Shiel in the northwest Highlands of Scotland. How many of the Five Sisters are Munros?

Answer: 3

Sgurr Fhuaran, Sgurr na Carnach and Sgurr na Ciste Duibhe are Munros. Sgurr nan Saighead and Sgurr nan Spainteach are both over 3,000 feet high as well, but the drop from their summits to the ridge is not enough to classify them as Munros, so they are known as "Tops".
10. Who was the first person to complete the winter round of the Munros (all climbed in one winter season) in 1984 / 85?

Answer: Martin Moran

Martin took 83 days to climb all the Munros in winter conditions (between 21 December and 13 March). In those days there were only 277 Munros, but he still walked 1,028 miles and climbed 412,000 feet in some very unpleasant weather.
