The Jacobite Clans were massacred at Culloden, near Inverness. Then Bonnie Prince Charlie fled to France.

Legend has it that Greyfriar's Bobby was a Skye terrier, and was loyal to his owner and guarded his grave for years. Local residents brought him food and water, and there is now a statue located near where he stayed. In 2011 a book was published casting doubt on the veracity of the story.

The author suggests that the story was a connivance on the part of local business people to attract customers to the area. Jan Bondeson published "Greyfriars Bobby: The Most Faithful Dog in the World" giving reasons why the story appears to be a myth.
