1. What is the tall, thin, mostly white structure that dominates the city's skyline called?

Answer: St. John's Beacon

St. John's Beacon was originally constructed to be a ventilation shaft for St John's Market. However, due to legal reasons, it was not used as such. It then became a revolving restaurant and later the home of three local radio stations: Radio City, Magic and City Talk.
2. Which Liverpool theatre is situated in Williamson's Square?

Answer: The Liverpool Playhouse

The Liverpool Playhouse is a Grade II listed building that was built in 1866. Its sister theatre is the Everyman theatre which is situated on Hope Street.
3. What is the name of the mysterious underground folly in Edge Hill, not far from Liverpool city centre?

Answer: Williamson's Tunnel

Williamson's Tunnel is a set of underground tunnels that were built under the order of local businessman Joseph Williamson in the 1800s in the Edge Hill district of Liverpool. No one is quite sure why he employed workmen to build these tunnels or even how far they extend, as most have caved in over the years. This is considered one of the world's largest underground follies.
4. The demolished Cameo Cinema in the Liverpool area of Wavertree was the scene of what high-publicised crime in March 1949?

Answer: The brutal double murder of the cinema manager and his assistant

Leonard Thomas and his assistant, Bernard Catterall, were both fatally shot in the cinema on this day in the late '40s. The murder was highly publicised and included the trial of two men, Charles Connelly and George Kelly, in the city's famous St George's Hall.

The building that housed the cinema was once a church. It was situated on Webster Road has since been demolished. New housing was later built on the site.
5. Liverpool's two cathedrals sit at opposite ends of which historic street?

Answer: Hope Street

Known as the bookends of the city, this odd pair sit at opposite ends of this street near the city's Edwardian quarter. The Liverpool Medical Institution and the Philharmonic Dining Rooms are also found on Hope Street.
6. What is the name of the dilapidated church on Rodney Street in Liverpool city centre?

Answer: Church of Saint Andrew

This is a Presbyterian church that was built in the 1820s to serve the ever-increasing Scottish community in the city. The church was shut in 1975.
7. What was once on the site of the city's Metropolitan Cathedral ("Paddy's Wigwam")?

Answer: A workhouse

The Catholics built on the land in the 1930s, knocked down the workhouse and built the cathedral on top. This was done to provide for their ever-growing community of Irish immigrants.
8. Liverpool Airport is named after which famous Liverpudlian?

Answer: John Lennon

This international airport is based in Speke, an area on the outskirts of Liverpool. On some flights out of/into Liverpool, you actually fly down the river Mersey, which is well worth the experience.
9. Why was Liverpool Overhead Railway closed in the 1950s?

Answer: It was in dire need of repair, but the £2m needed was beyond what The Liverpool Overhead Railway Company could afford.

Liverpool Overhead Railway was nicknamed "The Docker's Umbrella". It was the first electronically-operated overhead railway in the world. It ran mostly on iron viaducts along the side of the river Mersey between stations Seaforth Sands and Dingle. It was shut in 1956 as it was in dire need of repair.

Unfortunately, the company that owned it could not afford it and no other funding (e.g. from Liverpool City Council) was given.
10. Liverpool Echo is one of the city's local papers. What is its sister paper called?

Answer: Liverpool Daily Post

Liverpool Daily Post is the city's morning paper. The Liverpool Echo is the city's evening paper.
