1. In what part of Cumbria can you find Ashness Bridge?

Answer: Keswick

Ashness Bridge is in Keswick (pronounced "Kessick"), Cumbria, and is a very good example of a packhorse bridge. It also has one of the Lake District's most famous views, looking north to Derwentwater, Whinlatter, and Skiddaw.
2. Where can you find a museum dedicated to Beatrix Potter?

Answer: Bowness-on-Windermere

The Beatrix Potter museum is located in The Old Laundry and includes features such as The Beatrix Potter Emporium and The Tailor of Gloucester Tea Room.
3. On which mountain peak are Striding Edge and Red Tarn?

Answer: Helvellyn

Helvellyn is the third highest peak in England at 3118 feet (950 meters). Striding Edge is a popular spot for hiking, and is located between Birkhouse Moor and Helvellyn Proper. It is about a half mile in length with very steep slopes. Red Tarn stands at 2300 feet.
4. Moot Hall is located in Carlisle.

Answer: False

Moot Hall is in Keswick. It was built in Market Square in 1813 and is known for its unusual one-handed clock. It is now the home of a Tourist Information Centre, which is on the ground floor, and an art gallery upstairs.
5. Who lived in Dove Cottage from 1799 to 1813?

Answer: William Wordsworth

Dove Cottage was the home of poet William Wordsworth for about 14 years and he wrote most of his most enduring work during this time. The whitewashed cottage contains some of Wordsworth's personal affects and the attached museum offers permanent exhibits tracing his life.
6. Where is the Old Bridge House?

Answer: Ambleside

The Old Bridge House is in Ambleside on the north end of Lake Windermere. In the past it has been a tea room, a cobbler's, an apple store for Ambleside Hall, and a home for a family of eight! It is now owned by the National Trust.
7. The Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway was originally a branch line of Furness Railway.

Answer: True

The Furness Railway carried passengers and freight from Lakeside to Ulverston and Barrow, then south to Lancashire. It was closed by British Rail in the 1960s. The only part remaining is the 3.5 miles from Haverthwaite through Newby Bridge to the terminus at Lakeside.
8. What small village is located at the northern edge of Lake Ullswater?

Answer: Pooley Bridge

The village of Pooley Bridge cross the River Eamont, and was once a busy market town before Penrith took its place in the 19th century.
9. Does Lake Windermere have a speed limit?

Answer: Yes

There is now a speed limit of 6 or 10 knots, depending on the section. Lake Windermere is the largest lake in England. Bowness-on-Windermere is the center of many boating activities with about 10,000 boats registered. Sailing, canoeing, windsurfing, and water skiing are very common here.
10. Which of the following is NOT a Lake District visitor centre?

Answer: Penrith

The others are located at Bowness Bay, Broughton in Furness, Coniston Grasmere, Hawkshead, Keswick, Pooley Bridge, and Waterhead. The visitor centre at Brockhole is famous for its beautiful gardens and cafe.
