Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the most unusual state nicknames I have run across is the "Iodine Products State". Which state, known for its beaches and low country, once used this nickname?

Answer: South Carolina

Although this nickname is no longer in use, it once adorned South Carolina's license plates. The name came from the large amounts of iodine found in the state's vegetation. The most common nickname for South Carolina is "The Palmetto State".
2. Did you know there is a state known as the "Worst State Ever"? Which state, bordered by lakes and rivers, has this nickname?

Answer: Ohio

This nickname is mostly used by other states who maintain great football rivalries with Ohio's universities. Ohio's official nickname is "Buckeye State", but it is also the "Birthplace of Aviation," which is used on the state license plates, and the "Mother of Modern Presidents". I doubt that Ohioans appreciate being called the "Worst State Ever," except when their schools have winning football teams.
3. Which western state is nicknamed the "Battle Born State"?

Answer: Nevada

Nevada received this strange nickname because it joined the Union during the American Civil War. It is also the "Silver" and "Sagebrush" State.
4. In 2010, which state used the nickname "Sportsman's Paradise" on its license plates?

Answer: Louisiana

Louisiana has several nicknames which include "Pelican State," "Bayou State," "Sugar State," and "Creole State". "Sportsman's Paradise" refers to the state's many outdoor sporting and recreational activities.
5. No matter which way you pronounce it, one state is known as the "Tomato State". Are you familiar with the state nickname for this small state?

Answer: New Jersey

Since New Jersey is officially the "Garden State," it seems only natural that it would be also called the "Tomato State". New Jersey is 47th out of the 50 states in size (total area).
6. I was most intrigued when I came across the "Dark and Bloody Ground State". Do you have any idea how this beautiful state came to be called by such a gory nickname? Which state is it?

Answer: Kentucky

The "Dark And Bloody Ground State" supposedly alludes to battles fought between various Native American tribes, including Creek, Shawnee, Chicksaw, and Cherokee. I personally like "Bluegrass State" better.
7. You may be familiar with butternut squash, but did you know there is a "Butternut State"? Sometimes called the "Big Bend State", which one is it?

Answer: Tennessee

Actually, this nickname doesn't have anything to do with butternut squash. During the American Civil War, soldiers from Tennessee wore tan colored uniforms rather than blue or gray, thus the nickname. Officially, Tennessee is the "Volunteer State," but it is also known as the "Big Bend State" due to the way the Tennessee River flows south, then turns north forming a very large bend.
8. North Dakota is the "Peace Garden State," "Rough Rider State," and the "Sioux State". It also has a lesser known nickname. Select the correct one.

Answer: The Flickertail State

The flickertail is a ground squirrel found in the Northwest. It is best known as the Richardson ground squirrel.
9. Many western states have naturally growing cactus plants, of which there are hundreds of varieties. New Mexico is officially the "Cactus State," but it also has a rather undignified nickname. What is it?

Answer: The Vermin State

You probably know by now that I made up three of these nicknames. I'm so glad we don't actually have US states known by them. The "Vermin State" isn't as pleasant sounding as the "Land of Enchantment," used on New Mexico's license plates, or the "Land of Sunshine."
10. Which eastern state, nicknamed the "First State," is known also as the "Blue Hen State"?

Answer: Delaware

Delaware's state bird is the blue hen chicken. Just as most states have multiple nicknames, Delaware is also called the "Diamond State". It is known as the "First State" because it was the first state to ratify (approve) the United States Constitution in 1787.
