Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. CHARTERHOUSE in London is where the City of London housed their charters. False or True?

Answer: False

No link with charters at all. The name is from 'Chartreuse' where the Carthusian Order was first founded. Here in 1371 a monastery for Carthusian Monks was founded. Today it is a house of rest for aged 'brethren' who must belong to the Church of England, must be bachelors or widowers over sixty. Must have served as officers in the services or in one of the professions.
2. The bridge across the Thames that you can see just near the Houses of Parliament is the one that William Wordsworth wrote his famous 'Sonnet Upon Westminster Bridge' about. False or True?

Answer: False

There has been a new bridge since 1862.
3. The popular 'Burlington Arcade', off Piccadilly still has a beadle who will keep an eye on visitors to this famous shopping passage in which you are supposed not to RUN, WHISTLE or SHOUT. False or True ?

Answer: True

Burlington Arcade is a Regency shopping promenade with original shop windows. It still employs a beadle to preserve the gracious atmosphere. Dates back to 1819. The Arcade that is, not the beadle.
4. Among the street names with a story there is the Albany, a little street off Piccadilly Circus. The Duke of York and Albany had a House here that was later converted into 'Residential Chambers for Bachelor Gentlemen'. Among those who resided in them : Lord Byron, Macaulay, Gladstone, Arthur Pinero. False or true?

Answer: True

Graham Greene could still be added to the list.
5. The Tabard Inn from which Chaucer's Pilgrims left for Canterbury is now a hotel. False or True?

Answer: False

There is a plaque where once the Tabard Inn stood. And also a street name Tabard Street near Tabard Gardens east of Great Dover Street, south of London Bridge. But while you are in this area you might visit the last 'galleried coaching inn' of London, the George Inn, at 77 Borough High Street, where there are occasional theatrical performances.
6. The Guildhall in the City of London is where the Lord Mayor has his residence. False or True ?

Answer: False

Mansion House is the Lord Mayor's Residence, but the Guildhall is where the annual Lord Mayor's Show begins with the Old Lord Mayor handing over insignia to the New Lord Mayor.
7. The annual Lord Mayor's Show is organised on the second Saturday of January. False or True?

Answer: False

Second Saturday of November.
8. On ground floor level the windows of the Bank of England are protected by golden bars. False or True?

Answer: False

Of course not! Burglars would only be too happy. The ground floor of the Bank of England has no windows.
9. The Tower of London has been not only a palace and a prison, but also the Royal Mint and a zoo. False or true?

Answer: True

The Tower of London also houses the oldest Church of London: the Norman Chapel of St. John. Tower is famous for its 'Bloody Tower', 'Traitors' Gate', the ravens, Crown Jewels and the Yeomen Warders.
10. Technically speaking Kew Gardens is not a Royal Park, but a centre for botanic research. False or True?

Answer: True
