Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I visited the Four Corners Monument in the US with my family and my favorite uncle, affectionately known as "Unca Jimmy". When it was my turn to stand at the point where four states meet, I proudly said, "I'm standing in Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and _____". I was stuck naming the fourth state until UNCA helped. which was the other state?

Answer: Utah

Utter fiction. I had a favorite Uncle Jimmy, but he never vacationed with us. Nor did we ever go to the Four Corners. Nor did we ever call him "Unca".

However, sometimes young children have difficulty saying the word "uncle" and use "unca" instead; and that may stay as a permanent affectionate name. UNCA is also a bad mnemonic I invented for the four states, since the letters N, C, and A are used for multiple states. However U is unique to Utah.

Utah is in the northwest quadrant from the four corners spot; Arizona is in the southwest, New Mexico the southeast quadrant, and Colorado the northeast.
2. Take a cruise with me for my next list, which contains the following countries: Germany, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine. Wait I forgot to include the most obvious country on that river list. Which country is it?

Answer: Austria

A bucket list trip for many of us includes waltzing on the deck of a cruise ship on the Danube River, which flows through these countries and Austria.

The only country not on the list is the one most associated with the Danube River, Austria. How can we forgot the homeland of Johann Strauss, the Waltz King and composer of "The Blue Danube".
3. My friend Stan visited these capital cities: Kabul, Nur-Sultan (formerly Astana), Bishkek, Dushanbe, Ashgabut, and Tashkent. What one city is missing?

Answer: Islamabad

Thought you knew capital cities? Well these are the capital cities of the so-called "stans".

Kabul is the capital of Afghanistan
Nur-Sultan, formerly known as Astana, for Kazakhstan
Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan
Dushanbe, Tajikistan
Ashgabat, Turkmanistan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan

The remaining "stan" is, of course, Pakistan with its capital city being Islamabad.
4. The sun still sets on my next list of countries: Anguilla, Cayman Islands, Montserrat, Falkland Islands, Pitcairn Island, Turks and Caicos, Bermuda

Answer: Gibraltar

The sun never set on the British Empire. Well it's much smaller and still covers a wide expanse. These countries are remnants of the Empire, now part of the British Overseas Territories. Gibraltar is another member, although Spain still contests this.
5. Maidstone, Folkestone, Canterbury, Margate, Ramsgate, Rochester, Gillingham are cities and towns in an English county. Which of the following cities or towns also is a member of that list?

Answer: Dover

These are all cities or towns in the county of Kent, situated in the southeast corner of England. Ramsgate, Margate, Dover, and Folkestone are seaport towns in Kent. Canterbury is the second most important Church of England cathedral, once a pilgrimage site to the Thomas a Becket shrine.

Dover with its famous white cliffs is on the coast, a relatively short boat ride from France.
6. Cities including Chicago, Joliet, St Louis, Lebanon (Missouri), Joplin, Tulsa, Clinton (Oklahoma), Amarillo, Gallup (New Mexico), Tucumcari (New Mexico), Flagstaff (Arizona) are linked together. Get your kicks by identifying which of these cities also belongs in that list?

Answer: Santa Monica, California

These are some of the cities and towns on the "Mother Road" of the US, Route 66. The road started in Chicago and ended at the Santa Monica Pier in Greater Los Angeles. Before the US interstate system of roads was started in the 1950s, Route 66 was the main US highway linking the Midwest to the West, and was the road traveled in the 1930s by the Dust Bowl migrants to the Promised Land of California.

Although many of these towns were bypassed by the interstate system, you can still see remnants of their glory days standing. As the song says, "Get your kicks on Route 66".
7. Lagos, Yangon (Rangoon), Belize City, Istanbul, and Rio de Janeiro used to be correct answers in a geography quiz and are now wrong answers. Which of these cities belongs in that list?

Answer: Karachi

These cities were once the capital of their country and were replaced by another city some time in the 20th or 21st century.

Abuja replaced Lagos as Nigeria's capital in 1976.

Naypyidaw replaced Yangon (Rangoon) as the capital city of Myanamar (Burma) in about 2006.

Belmopan replaced Belize City as the capital of Belize after hurricane damage in 1961 to the former capital.

Istanbul had been capital of the Ottoman Empire and Turkey until 1923 when Kemal Atatürk moved the capital to Ankara.

Rio de Janeiro was capital of Brazil until 1960 when a new planned city of Brasilia replaced it.

Karachi is still the largest city of Pakistan was its first capital until 1967 when the capital was temporarily moved to Rawalpindi and then permanently to nearby Islamabad.
8. Perhaps you should get out your passport to visit the following lakes, which share a common geographical/political feature: Lake Victoria, Lake Chad, Lake Champlain, Lake Geneva, Lake Lugano, and Lake Superior Which of the following lakes also belongs in that list?

Answer: Lake Titicaca

These lakes are international lakes, on the border of two or more countries, and you could be traveling between countries.

Lake Victoria: Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania

Lake Chad: Chad, Niger, Nigeria, and Cameroon

Lake Champlain: United States and Canada

Lake Geneva: France and Switzerland

Lake Lugano: Switzerland and Italy

Lake Superior: US and Canada

Lake Titicaca is shared by Bolivia and Peru.

A tip of the cap to Ken Jennings who gave me this idea with a similar question on mountains shared by two countries.
9. The next list includes the Blue Lagoon (Iceland), Harrogate (England), Vichy (France), Baden Baden (Germany), Karlovy Vary (Czech Republic), Pamukkale (Turkey). Where else could I go for similar relaxation?

Answer: Bath, England

The list includes many of the notable hot springs and spa towns in Europe. The hot mineral springs in Bath were known before the Romans arrived, but they built up the spa. After they left in the 5th century, rising water and silting placed them in a state of disrepair. By the 1700s they had regained their popularity among the gentry.
10. Flying due east, I visit Colombia, Brazil, Sao Tome & Principe, Gabon, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Kenya, Somalia, Maldives, Indonesia and Kiribati are members of a list. What obvious country was omitted?

Answer: Ecuador

Ecuador is derived from the Spanish for equator; so obviously it belongs in the list of countries which the equator passes through.

Incidentally a quick Internet search will produce similar lists of countries that have the Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, or Greenwich Prime Meridian transversing them.
