Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which U.S. state contains the island of Nantucket?

Answer: Massachusetts

Nantucket is an island in Massachusetts known for having very rich people. Nantucket is not accessible by road, however, there is a ferry connecting Cape Cod with Nantucket. Martha's Vineyard is another island similar to Nantucket in both location and wealth. Martha's Vineyard is composed of several towns, unlike Nantucket.

2. From what did the Dead Sea get its name?

Answer: Only bacteria and algae can live there.

While Egyptians did use the water in their mummification rites, the name stems from the fact that most living organisms cannot survive in it. Its high salt content (over 30%) makes it extremely hostile to all life except bacteria and some algae. It is possible, however, to swim, or rather float, in the sea.

4. Lake Retba (Lac Rose) is an unusual body of water located north-east of Dakar, Senegal. What is unusual about this lake?

Answer: pink color

The high saline content produced by Dunaliella salina algae creates a beautiful pink color, particularly visible during the dry season which lasts from November to June. Salt extraction is a popular industry here, all done by hand. Workers collect salt from the bottom of the lake and transport it using baskets. The salt is later used to preserve fish.
