Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I am standing on the edge of one of the largest man-made lakes in the world, looking at an ancient temple built for Ramses II, which had to be relocated due to the rising waters of the lake, it is very hot here.

Answer: Abu Simbel

Abu Simbel, sits on the edge of Lake Nasser, which separates Egypt from Sudan. This large temple was built for Ramesses II.
Each statue is about 20 metres high, and they were moved from the original place due to the rising waters from the Aswan dam.
2. I am standing in front of a palace in a country which is often referred to as a millionaires playground. This place has a population of less than 40,000, and is the home to the most 'glamorous' Formula One race.

Answer: Monaco

It has an area of only 485 acres, of which nearly 100 were recovered from the sea during the course of the last twenty years. And further 'reclaims' are being sought.
3. I am in a pretty little town named after a church. Set amongst numerous lakes, and in the view of the largest mountain range in Ireland.

Answer: Killarney

With the numerous Lakes, the MacGillicuddy Reeks, this is a real tourist trap!
A trip through the Gap of Dunloe behind a horse drawn cart is a great way to see some of this part of the country.
4. The childhood home of Anne Boleyn, who is also supposed to haunt here. Henry VIII visited here often also.

Answer: Hever Castle

I find it strange that Anne Boleyn would haunt this castle, as it was Henry who had her beheaded at the tower of London, while he occupied Leeds Castle, which to me would have been where I would have haunted if I were a ghost!
Incidentally, there are different spellings of the surname of Anne - Boleyn, Boylen, Bolleyn, Boelyn, Boeleyn, Bolyn, whilst her birth name was actually Anne Bullen.
5. Looking out from a structure higher than the Eiffel tower, the tallest in the Southern Hemisphere, I can see a bridge spanning the harbour of a city affectionately known as the City of Sails.

Answer: Auckland

The view is from the Sky Tower in Auckland New Zealand, the 34th tallest structure in the world, at 1075 feet/328 meters.

It is called the city of sails as it has the highest number of boats per head of population in the world.
6. I am standing within the ruins of the ancient birth place of one of the largest international sporting events on the planet.

Answer: Olympia

According to tradition, the Olympic Games began in 776 B.C. when Ifitos made a treaty with Lycourgos the king and famous legislator of Sparta and Cleisthenes the king of Pissa.
In total the Olympic Games consisted of 10 events: running, the pentathlon, jumping, discus, javelin, wrestling, boxing, the pancration, chariot racing, and horse racing. For the running, there was a track, and any races longer than the 100 metres, you just ran back and forth down the track.
When male athletes used to compete, it was completely naked, married women were not allowed to attend. A womens' event also came about, though entirely separate. They supposedly covered themselves in Olive oil to protect the skin from the intense heat, as it was usually staged at the height of their summer in June or July.
7. I am the coldest, windiest and driest continent on earth.

Answer: Antarctica

The fifth-largest continent, following Asia, Africa, North America, and South America, but larger than Australia and the subcontinent of Europe, about 98% thick ice sheet and 2% rock.
As there is no rainfall, it is technically a desert!
With an estimated average altitude of over 7500 feet.
8. My ancient name was Edo, I started out as a tiny little fishing village. I have, however turned into one of the world's financial centres.

Answer: Tokyo

A vibrant city, Tokyo remains a glittering example of the 'resurgence' of post-WWII Japan, with twelve million residents.
9. I am on a group of 333 Islands in the Pacific, which used to be known as the Cannibal Isles, and was avoided by Mariners.

Answer: Fiji

Fiji is quite an exotic destination, the islands offer a wealth of tropical scenery, from rushing mountain rivers and waterfalls in the depths of the rainforest, to palm-fringed beaches where time seems to stop, and the locals are extremely friendly.
10. I am in a city, famous for its Gothic architecture, which has recently escaped the grip of communism. The country which it is the capital of, is well known for its love of beer, and quality!

Answer: Prague

With the towering spires, meandering rivers, watched over by a castle over a thousand years old, Prague is fast becoming a top tourist destination.
A lot of films are also being made there, most notably of late was 'Blade 2', 'A Knights Tale' and most recently 'xXx'.
