Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Arthur Miller's 1953 play "The Crucible" is set in which city?

Answer: Salem, Massachusetts

Miller's play depicts the trials for witchcraft which took place in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692 and 1693. The play is not only historical but was also intended by the author as an allegory to the campaign of U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy and the House of Representatives Committee on Un-American Activities. Miller was questioned by HUAC and convicted of contempt of Congress for refusing to disclose who had attended meetings with him.
2. Which city was named for the Hellenized pronunciation of the Hebrew word for peace?

Answer: Both Salem, Massachusetts and Salem, Oregon

In the Old Testament book of Genesis, the home of Melchizedek, priest and king, is identified as Salem (Gen, 4:18). "Salem" is the Hellenized form of "shalom" which is the Hebrew word for peace. Some commentators think this to be a reference to Jeru-salem. The decision to name the Massachusetts community for peace was intentional. The naming of the Oregon city is more disputed. What was first called Chemeketa, was named Salem with reference to the word for peace, or with reference to the city of Jerusalem, or after the city in Massachusetts.
3. Which city is a state capital?

Answer: Salem, Oregon

Salem, Oregon is the county seat of Marion County, was made the capital of the Oregon Territory in 1842, incorporated in 1857 and became the capital of Oregon in 1859. There have been three capitol buildings, all on the same site, the first two of which were destroyed by fire. The present capitol building is topped by a golden 22-foot statue of a pioneer which was sculpted and erected in 1938. The Golden Pioneer has a beard, which explains why so many Oregonians grow beards.
4. In which city is Salem State University located?

Answer: Salem, Massachusetts

Salem State University was first established in 1854 as the Salem Normal School, became Salem Teachers College in 1932, Salem State College in 1968, and Salem State University in 2010. It is a four-year university with approximately 10,000
undergraduates. Its athletic teams compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III as the Vikings.
5. The long-running U.S. soap opera "Days of our Lives" is set in a fictional town called Salem. On which real Salem is it based?

Answer: Neither Salem, Massachusetts nor Salem, Oregon

The programme's setting is a town somewhere in the Midwest which was built and named in 1802. The fictional date of its founding is known because in 2002 (in the TV series) the town celebrated its bicentennial. There is an actual town named Salem in Illinois (which is the birthplace of both William Jennings Bryan and of Miracle Whip salad dressing) which claims to be the pattern on which the "Days of our Lives" town is constructed.
6. Which city has a beautifully rebuilt AmTrak station, first built in 1918?

Answer: Salem, Oregon

The railroad station in Salem, Oregon, was originally built to serve the Southern Pacific Railroad. It modernly serves the AmTrak Cascades and the Coast Starlight passenger trains. The building is in the Beaux-Arts style. There are five masonry stations in Oregon: Albany, Medford, Roseburg, Eugene and Salem.
7. Willamette University was founded in 1842 in which city?

Answer: Salem, Oregon

Willamette University was founded in 1842 as a private school with a distinctly Methodist tilt. The undergraduate liberal-arts programme is balanced by a law school and a graduate school of business. The campus is across the street from the Oregon state capitol. College athletic teams, which compete in NCAA Division III, are called the Bearcats.
8. In which city were Olympic gold-medal skier Debbie Armstrong, Olympic champion diver Thelma R. Payne (1896-1988), and Zollie Volchok, who won the NBA's Executive of the Year Award in 1983 for his work as the general manager of the Seattle SuperSonics basketball team, born?

Answer: Salem, Oregon

The inventor of the Erector Set, Alfred Carlton Gilbert (1884-1961), was also born in Salem, Oregon. Always an athlete, he tied for the gold medal in pole vault at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London. He worked his way through Yale as a magician.
9. According to a U.S. House Resolution signed by President Barack Obama on 10 January 2013, which city is the birthplace of the United States National Guard?

Answer: Salem, Massachusetts

The Congressional resolution recites the relevant history: the organization of the first militia in Massachusetts Bay Colony in Salem in 1629, and the creation of three Massachusetts national guard regiments in 1636.
10. The Walt Disney movie "Hocus Pocus" (1993) was filmed at night in Burbank, California, and during the day in which Salem?

Answer: Salem, Massachusetts

Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy played the witches accidentally brought back to life by a youngster. Their plan is to suck the souls out of all of the children in modern-day Salem, Massachusetts. High adventure follows. Interiors were shot on a sound stage in Burbank, California; daytime exteriors were shot in Salem and nearby Marblehead.
