Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which city was named after Captain George Vancouver?

Answer: Both B.C. and Washington

George Vancouver (1757-1798) served his lifetime in the British Royal Navy. He explored the Pacific Coast of the U.S. and Canada 1791-1795. Vancouver Island and Vancouver, the city, in British Columbia, are named after him, as is the city of Vancouver in Washington State. He sailed with Captain Cook and explored Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, as well.
2. The 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games were held in which city?

Answer: Vancouver, B.C.

There were two centers of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games: Vancouver and Whistler (a winter sports resort about 75 miles north of the city). The Games were conducted 12-28 February. 2600 athletes from 82 nations competed in seven sports, fifteen disciplines and 86 events.

In a training run before the Games actually began, Georgian Nodar Kumaritashvili was killed when he lost control of his luge and was thrown over the sidewall into a steel post at 89 miles per hour.
3. The Nautilus Company manufactures fitness equipment for home use such as the Nautilus, BowFlex, Schwinn Fitness and Universal. Where is it located?

Answer: Vancouver, Washington

The Nautilus Company was founded in 1986 to market the Nautilus exercise machine. It acquired other brands (e.g. BowFlex and Stair Climber) and marketed directly to consumers through television infomercials, in addition to some retail outlets and an on-line store.

The company has been recognized as a great place to work and its super-healthy employees enter various physical challenges (e.g. The Tough Mudder obstacle race in Fossil, Oregon) to demonstrate their strength and endurance.
4. Which city is the home of Simon Fraser University?

Answer: Vancouver, B.C.

Simon Fraser University was founded in 1965 and now has three campuses in Greater Vancouver, B.C. The first built is atop Burnaby Mountain, the second in Surrey and the third in downtown Vancouver. SFU was the first Canadian college or university to join the NCAA.

The school is the place at which Gung Haggis Fat Choy -- a goofy concelebration of Robert Burns' Birthday and Chinese New Year -- originated.
5. In 2011, which city was the most ethnically and linguistically diverse with 52% of the population speaking a first language other than English?

Answer: Vancouver, B.C.

Vancouver, BC, was originally built by English, Scottish and Irish people, giving the city a British flavour ('tho not so British as Victoria, BC). In 2017, at least 30% of the population is of Chinese heritage. Many immigrants came from Hong Kong to avoid the transition to Red Chinese control. Many other Asian ethnic groups are also represented, as are Germans and Portuguese.
6. Which city was built where Lewis and Clark camped?

Answer: Vancouver, Washington

The Lewis and Clark Expedition camped in the area of present-day Vancouver, Washington, in 1806. Meriwether Lewis highly recommended settlement there in his journal. It was first an outpost of the Hudson's Bay Company, then called Vancouver City, then Columbia City and finally the City of Vancouver (in 1857).
7. Which city's development was hampered by the lack of a deep-water port?

Answer: Neither B.C. nor Washington

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority operates the Port of Vancouver. In terms of tonnage, it is the third largest port in the Americas, more than New York, although New York moves numerically more containers.

The deep-water Port of Vancouver is located on the Columbia River. There are five terminals. In order to off-load gigantic wind-energy towers, the largest mobile harbor crane in North America is located there.
8. Where were buxom actress Pamela Anderson, Tommy Chong (of Cheech and Chong fame), James Doohan ("Scotty" on the original TV show "Star Trek"), and actor Dan George born?

Answer: Vancouver, B.C.

Also actor Jason Priestley, actor Boris Karloff, funny man Seth Rogen, actress Yvonne DeCarlo, James Barber (the Urban Peasant), actor Ryan Reynolds, Jack Benny's wife Mary Livingstone, singer Michael Bublé, and actress Margot Kidder. Impressive, eh?
9. Which city is the home of Clark College?

Answer: Vancouver, Washington

Clark College was founded in 1933 as a two-year college in the heart of Vancouver, Washington. It moved several times before settling into its present location in the city's Central Park. The sports teams of Clark College are represented by Oswald, a Galapagon penguin.

The student body self-describes as "the Penguin Nation" and engages in things like a student healthy-living programme called "Healthy Penguin Nation."
10. Where were the first five seasons of TV's "The X-Files" shot?

Answer: Vancouver, B.C.

Both David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson wanted to move to Los Angeles. Seasons 6-9 were shot in California; the movie "I Want to Believe" and Season 10 were shot back in Vancouver.
