Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On which Hawaiian island is the Na Pali Coast located?

Answer: Kaua'i

The mountainous shoreline of the Napali Coast on Kauai's North Shore, in particular Manawaiopuna Falls, was the setting for much of the motion picture "Jurassic Park" (1993). The coast is accessible by hiking a challenging 17-mile trail, by tour boat or on an aerial tour from Lihue (about 90 miles away).

The bold and the fit may also try a guided kayak or raft tour, as well. The terrain is rugged: high cliffs, numerous waterfalls, verdant valleys and lovely beaches.
2. The Hulihee Palace can be found on which Hawaiian island?

Answer: Hawai'i

In the heart of "downtown" Kailua-Kona on the Island of Hawai'i sits the Hulihee Palace, the vacation home of the Hawaiian royal family built in 1838. It is located on Ali'i Drive which wends through the center of Historic Kailua Village. The home has been preserved as a museum containing items from the Victorian era of King Kalakaua and Queen Kapiolani. Admission is by purchased ticket.
3. To which Hawaiian island would you go to visit the USS Arizona Memorial?

Answer: O'ahu

There are several options for visitors to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial on the Island of O'ahu. One of these is a visit to the USS Arizona Memorial. The National Park Service and the US Navy manage this memorial and offer the boat-ride to and 45-minute programme on the memorial. The remains of the USS Arizona are clearly visible from the memorial's floating deck. This is a somber place to visit as the bodies of over 900 sailors remain "buried at sea" in the hull.
4. Yokohama Bay can be seen on which Hawaiian island?

Answer: O'ahu

Yokohama Bay (also called Keawaula Beach) is located on the northwest tip of the Island of O'ahu, very much off the customary path. The beach got its name from the Japanese fishermen who named it in the early 1900s. The Hawaiian name means red harbour, which describes the red squid which school there.

The bay is secluded because the road comes to an end at the beach; it is much easier to continue up and around the North Shore, leaving Yokohama Bay to those who appreciate it.
5. Volcanoes National Park is situated on which Hawaiian island?

Answer: Hawai'i

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is located just 45 miles southwest of the city of Hilo on the Island of Hawai'i. The park embraces 523 square miles which is larger than the entire Island of O'ahu. It comprises two active volcanoes: Maunaloa, which last erupted in 1984 and Kilauea which erupts pretty much continuously. Kilauea has added over 900 acres to the island since 1983. Because there are hazards attendant to a visit, one needs to contact the Kilauea Visitors Center to discuss which parts of the park are closed, which are threatened by lava and where deadly gasses may be emitted.
6. Saint Andrew's Cathedral is located on which Hawaiian island?

Answer: O'ahu

There are four cathedrals in the State of Hawai'i: two Roman Catholic, one Greek Orthodox and the Cathedral Church of Saint Andrew, which is Episcopal. Saint Andrew's was commissioned by King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma in 1862; the cornerstone was laid by King Kamehameha V in 1867.

The Episcopal Church there is the home of Episcopal Bishop of Hawai'i and of Saint Andrew's private schools. The cathedral campus is on Queen Emma Street, in Honolulu, on the Island of O'ahu.
7. To which Hawaiian island would you go to see the Tropical Bioreserve & Garden?

Answer: Hawai'i

In 1977 a private citizen Dan J. Lutkenhouse purchased the property which would become the Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve and Garden. He opened it to the public in 1984 to share his collection and to raise funds for improvements. In 1995, he gave the garden to a non-profit trust which operates it today. The 17-acre preserve is located in Pāpa'ikou on the Island of Hawai'i. The valley in which it sits leads to Onomea Bay, as does a boardwalk leading to the shore. The property includes a three-tiered waterfall called Onomea Falls.
8. On which Hawaiian island can Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park be found?

Answer: Hawai'i

A monument to the place where Captain James Cook was killed by Hawaiian natives in 1779 is located at Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park. The park is located about twelve miles south of Kailua-Kona on the Island of Hawai'i. In addition to its historic significance, Kealakekua Bay is a Marine Life Conservation District where snorkeling and diving are excellent. In addition, a sacred temple called the Hikiau heiau, dedicated to the god Lono, is located on the east side of the bay.
9. Wailua Falls can be visited on which Hawaiian island?

Answer: Kaua'i

Just north of Lihue, at the south end of the Wailua River, on the Island of Kaua'i, Wailua Falls tumbles in two streams. Visitors to the falls sometimes recognize them as those in the opening credits of the old "Fantasy Island" television series. The roughly one-hundred-foot falls are best visited mid-morning when the sun creates a rainbow in the mist generated by them (depending upon the rainfall upstream).
10. Near which Hawaiian island is Molokini situated?

Answer: Maui

The islet of Molokini is one of the most visited SCUBA and snorkeling spots in Hawai'i. Boat tours from the nearby Maui shore have been reduced to protect the coral and the fish which harbour in the old collapsed volcanic crater which is Molokini. The crater is called Puʻu Olai in Hawaiian. The islet is uninhabited, state- and federally-protected, and is a seabird sanctuary. Legend holds that Pele, the goddess of fire, and Molonini, a beautiful woman, were in love with the same man so Pele turned Molokini's head into the stone which then became the islet.
