Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On which Hawaiian island is Lahaina located?

Answer: Maui

The former whaling town of Lahaina was the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii from 1820 to 1845. Today it is a popular tourist destination on the Island of Maui. Front Street is a party in progress. The Banyan Court Park has one of the largest banyan trees (Ficus benghalensis) on the planet. It was planted by William Owen Smith on April 24, 1873. The Ancient Hawaiian name for Lahaina was Lele; the name Lahaina means cruel sun.
2. The Road to Hana can be found on which Hawaiian island?

Answer: Maui

The Road to Hana is 64.4 miles long. It includes portions of Hawaii Routes 36 and 360 which connect the town of Kahului to the town of Hana in east Maui. Because the road is one-lane in many places and crosses numerous one-lane bridges (46 of them), it takes at least three hours to drive. Construction began in the 1900s, the road was "completed" in 1926, and finally completely paved in the 1960s. There are numerous places to stop along the road, e.g. waterfalls, the Seven Sacred Pools, and the grave site of Charles Lindbergh.
3. To which Hawaiian island would you go to visit Hickam Air Force Base?

Answer: O'ahu

Hickam Field was completed in 1938 to provide additional support for the Army Air Corps on the Island of O'ahu. The Japanese Imperial Navy bombed Hickam in 1941 to prevent American fighter aircraft from following the planes which attacked Pearl Harbor back to their aircraft carriers. After the war, Hickam Field became Hickam Air Force Base. This base was merged with the U.S. Naval Activity at Pearl Harbor to become Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.
4. The Hanapepe salt ponds can be seen on which Hawaiian island?

Answer: Kaua'i

Sea salt is made in Hawai'i by concentrating and drying seawater in ponds or flats or beds or patches. At Hanapepe, on the Island of Kaua'i, the Hanapepe Salt Ponds are located adjacent to Salt Pond Beach Park. The park is open to the public; the salt ponds are strictly reserved to the use of Native Hawaiians who pass down their rights to make salt there by inheritance. Hawaiian sea salt ("paa kai") is used to season food, in medicine, and as a preservative. Hanapepe is also the headquarters of Lappert's Hawaiian Ice Cream Company, but that is another matter.
5. Diamond Head is situated on which Hawaiian island?

Answer: O'ahu

At the eastern end of Waikiki Beach, on O'ahu, Diamond Head is an extinct volcano and crater which is a sort of emblem of Honolulu. The Diamond Head State Monument is a sort of state park which includes Diamond Head, the trail/stairways up it, a visitors center, shops and restrooms. The trail was built in 1908 to service a gun emplacement protecting the O'ahu Coast. The hike is so popular that there are limits to usage and a system of reservations.
6. The Cathedral Basilica of our Lady of Peace is located on which Hawaiian island?

Answer: O'ahu

At the end of the Front Street Mall in Honolulu on O'ahu sits the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace. When built in 1840-43, it was known as Cathédrale de Notre Dame de la Paix or Malia o ka Malu Hale Pule Nui. The cathedral is the mother church of Roman Catholic churches in Hawai'i and the residence of the Bishop of Honolulu. Saint Damien of Molokaʻi was ordained priest in this church.
7. To which Hawaiian island would you go to see the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Visitor Center?

Answer: Hawai'i

Macadamia trees came from Australia to Hawai'i in 1881. The first Hawaiian macadamia plantation was attempted in 1921. The University of Hawaii and the Mauna Loa Nut Company partnered to develop this agricultural industry. Mauna Loa first planted macadamia in 1946 on the Island of Hawai'i. That beginning grew to over 10,000 acres.

The Mauna Loa Nut Visitor's Center offers a self-guided tour of the factory which sorts and shells the nuts, dries them, enrobes some in chocolate and packages them for sale.

There is a well-marked crosswalk on the property designated a "nut crossing" at which visitors delight in taking photographs.
8. On which Hawaiian island can the Lyman Mission House Museum be found?

Answer: Hawai'i

Waves of Congregationalist, Presbyterian and Dutch Reformed ministers traveled to Hawai'i in the 19th century. In 1832, the Reverend David Belden Lyman and his wife, Sarah Joiner Lyman, arrived in Hilo on the Island of Hawai'i. They built a boarding school and established a church there. Mark Twain stayed there. The family's descendants established the Lyman House Memorial Museum on the site.
9. Hanakapi'ai Falls can be visited on which Hawaiian island?

Answer: Kaua'i

Hanakapi'ai Falls are located on the Island of Kaua'i, not far from Hanalei and Ke'e Beach. The beautiful 300-foot waterfall is worth what can be an especially challenging hike up the Hanakapi'ai Valley. The distance is only 4.5 miles one way but the terrain is rough, the trail poorly maintained, requires multiple stream crossings, and is considered to be at least an eight-hour hike. The trail passes through mountain apple trees, bamboo forests, and coffee bushes which have gone native.
10. On which Hawaiian island is the Crater Rim Drive situated?

Answer: Hawai'i

There are two principal motor-car tours within Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park on the Island of Hawai'i: the Crater Rim Drive and the Chain of Craters Road. Two-wheel-drive vehicles are sufficient to the tour. Crater Rim Drive begins just inside the park at the Kilauea Visitor Center. Visitors begin by visiting the Kilauea Overlook and then following the drive clockwise.

The eleven-mile drive circles the rim and affords stops at the Sulfur Banks (Ha'akulamanu), the Thurston Lava Tube (Nāhuku), and the Devastation Trail. Volcanic activity is unpredictable. Conditions in the park change quickly. Safety is paramount therefore parts of the park may be closed on short notice.
