1. How many years did it take to construct the Sydney Harbour Bridge?

Crossing Sydney Harbour was only possible by ferry before the Sydney Harbour Bridge was opened. The construction of the bridge began on 28th July 1923. The bridge was designed by Ralph Freeman and Co. of London and their plans were formed by John Bradfield. The bridge was opened on the 19th March 1932. The bridge itself only took 3 years to build. The rest of the time was spent building the southern and northern approaches and roadways.
2. Who opened the Sydney Harbour Bridge?

Answer: Jack Lang

Jack Lang was the Premier of New South Wales when the bridge was opened. He opened the bridge on Saturday 19th March 1932.
3. When it was opened, the Sydney Harbour Bridge was the widest and tallest steel arch bridge in the world.

Answer: True

The steel arch bridge is 134 metres high and 49 metres wide (with a curve of 503 metres). The bridge has six million rivets in total, and weighs 52,800 tonnes. When looking up at the bridge, then you will see what a massive and well built bridge it actually is.
4. The Sydney Harbour Bridge stretches from Dawes Point on the south to which Sydney suburb on the other side of Sydney Harbour?

Answer: Milsons Point

There are many ways to see the Sydney Harbour Bridge. You can park underneath it, you can see it from other certain places in Sydney including the Opera House, a swimming pool near the harbour and even Luna Park.
5. If I rang BridgeClimb in Sydney, would I be able to join a tour so I could walk up the Sydney Harbour Bridge?

Answer: Yes

It is definitely worth climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which starts from within a stone pylon at the southern end, then travels along the top of the structure, where there are spectacular views. You need to be very brave to walk up the bridge as it is a long way up. One tip also, don't look down, look out towards the Opera House, but don't look down!
6. How much was the toll for a car to cross the bridge when the bridge first opened ?

Answer: 5 cents

The initial toll for a car was 6 pence (5 cents) and a horse and rider was 3 pence (2 cents). Nowadays, over 200,000 cars cross the bridge per day and are able to see ferries cross underneath as well as witnessing the Opera House.
7. Which famous Australian actor used to work on maintaining the Sydney Harbour Bridge?

Answer: Paul Hogan

Paul Hogan, who is famous for starring in the movie "Crocodile Dundee" (1986), once worked on maintaining the Sydney Harbour Bridge by working as a rigger and painter. The captain was arrested, the ribbon was tied together, and the ceremony went ahead.
