Stephen Douglas was part of the new guard and just starting to make a name for himself in Illinois. Henry Clay was known as the great compromiser. John C. Calhoun was known for his nullification theory. Daniel Webster was an exceptional orator and a preserver of the Union.

3. What was President Lincoln's goal at the beginning of the Civil War?

Answer: To preserve the Union

Lincoln wanted a quick resolution to get the South back in the Union. But after the First Battle of Bull Run/Manassas everybody knew it would be a long stuggle.
4. Whom did the Emancipation Proclamation actually free immediately?

Answer: Nobody

Lincoln's Proclamation on January 1st, 1863, stated that it freed "all slaves in rebelling states". Slavery was still allowed in the important border states that would make or break the war for one side or the other. Slaves were slowly freed as the Civil War progressed/continued and almost all were free by the time the Civil War ended on April 9th, 1865.

Answer: John Quincy Adams

This was the deal between Henry Clay and Adams for Adams to become president and Clay to become secretary of state, which in those days was an almost certain way into the presidency.

Answer: Tecumseh

Tecumseh (1768-1813) was a famous leader of the Shawnee, but Sherman was not related to him.
15. What was the single bloodiest day in American history?

Answer: September 17, 1862

This was the first day of the Battle of Antietam. The others were 9/11, Pearl Harbor, and the Battle at Yorktown.
