Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As you enter, your host welcomes you and reminds you that each room in the house is devoted to a different decade from the 20th century. For example, in this room you can read "The Martian Chronicles" while doing the Hokey Pokey in a Poodle skirt. You are having trouble hearing him because they are playing what song too loudly?

Answer: The Tennessee Waltz

"The Martian Chronicles" (1950) by Ray Bradbury, Poodle skirts, and the Hokey Pokey were popular in the 1950s, as was the "Tennessee Waltz" (1951) which was Patti Page's biggest hit. You would definitely not hear "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" (1941), "96 Tears" (1966), or "Layla" (1970) coming out of the record player in this room.
2. Seeking to escape the loud music, you move next door where you find people listening to Bing Crosby and watching "Pinocchio" but unfortunately, a vandal has written "Kilroy was Here" on the wall. You notice that a lot of people are wearing what?

Answer: Bobby socks

Bing Crosby, and "Pinocchio" (1940) were popular in the 1940s as were Bobby Socks (particularly with Frank Sinatra's teenage fans) and, for some reason, 1940s vandals loved writing "Kilroy was here" on things. Cloche hats (1920s), Coonskin caps (a result of the Davy Crockett fad in the 1950s), and Bouffant hairdos (a fad inspired by Jackie Kennedy in the 1960s) would be inappropriate attire for this room.
3. The next room is illuminated by a black light, and people in Nehru jackets are throwing around Superballs. What have they got going on the boob tube?

Answer: The Flintstones

Superballs, black lights, and Nehru jackets were all fads of the 1960s, and "The Flintstones" was a classic 1960s show running from 1960-1966. "I Married Joan" (1950s), "The Flip Wilson Show" (1970s), and "Family Ties" (1980s) shouldn't be on the TV in this room.
4. People are having a good time in the next room. They have a framed copy of "American Gothic" on the wall right by where people are playing Monopoly and singing a chorus of "God Bless America." What book might you peruse before leaving?

Answer: Tobacco Road

American Gothic, Monopoly, and "God Bless America" are all associated with the 1930s as is Erskine Caldwell's story of poverty in the south, "Tobacco Road" (1932). The room would definitely not contain "The Sun Also Rises" (1926), "The Human Comedy" (1943), or "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (1963).
5. You stroll into the next room only to find two guys dressed as Beavis and Butthead so excited about their new pogs that they are doing the Macarena! You spend a few minutes amusing yourself playing what game?

Answer: Doom

Beavis and Butthead, pogs, and the Macarena were all phenomena of the 1990s as was the video game "Doom" (1993). "Donkey Kong" (1981), "World of Warcraft" (2001), and "Pong" (1975) would likely not be compatible with this room's video game console.
6. Watch out in the next room! A guy loses control of the nerf balls he is juggling and one lands in the fondue pot and it tips over into the bean bag chair! You're so upset that you need to grab a drink! Fortunately, they have cans of what beverage available?

Answer: Billy Beer

Nerf balls, fondue, and bean bag chairs were all fads of the 1970s as was Billy Beer which was introduced in 1977 and named after Billy Carter (brother of President Jimmy Carter). You would not want to take a sip of New Coke (1985), Tab (1963), or RC Cola (1959) in this room.
7. You go upstairs to a room where they have a plate of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches laid out and people are playing mah-jongg while sitting on flag poles. You're in the mood to dance; what would be a good dance for this room?

Answer: Charleston

Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches became popular for the first time in the 1920s as did mah-jongg and flag pole sitting. People in the 1920s loved doing the Charleston, but would have been less interested in the Turkey Trot (1910s), the Rumba (1930s), or the Jitterbug (1940s).
8. In the next room, somebody dressed up as Tarzan of the Apes is showing "Birth of a Nation," and everybody is singing about going "Over There." On your way out, what painting do you notice hanging by the door?

Answer: Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2

The 1910s saw "Tarzan of the Apes" (1914), "Birth of a Nation" (1915), and doughboys singing "Over There" as they shipped off to World War I. Marcel Duchamp's "Nude Descending a Staircase, No.2" caused a scandal at the famous 1913 Armory Show because it pushed the boundaries of what people at the time considered "art." "Dogs Playing Poker" (1903) was a series of paintings done to advertise cigars, "Dempsey and Firpo" (1924) was a painting of a 1920s boxing match by George Bellows, and "The Persistence of Memory" (1931) is a famous surrealist painting by Salvador Dali.
9. So much to do in the next room! They've got a Trivial Pursuit game going, or you can check out the girl in the leg warmers who is programming her Apple IIe. The people in this room ask you to stay for the midnight showing of what cult movie?

Answer: Repo Man

People wore leg warmers, played Trivial Pursuit, and programmed Apple IIes in the 1980s and also watched "Repo Man" (1984). The other cult movies ("Pink Flamingos" (1972), "Slacker" (1991), and "Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!" (1965)) would not work in a 1980s themed room.
10. It's been a long night, and you are almost done. The last room has a rousing game of ping pong going, a barbershop quartet is crooning "Sweet Adeline," and you can watch movies on the Nickelodeon. However, you haven't had anything to eat all night. What nice refreshments are they offering here?

Answer: Ice Cream Cones

The period from 1900 to 1910 saw Ping Pong introduced to the United States and become a fad, and barbershop quartets loved to sing "Sweet Adeline" (1903), and the invention of the Nickelodeon (1905) brought movies to the masses. This room is more likely to have Ice Cream Cones available (famously popularized at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904) than Cracker Jacks (1893), Oreos (1912), or Girl Scout Cookies (1922).
