Answer: 618,000

About 620,000 people died in the Civil War. Most of these deaths were caused by disease, uncleaned medical equipment that spread disease, and lead bullet wounds, which were usually lethal. Starvation was another major cause of death.
2. How many men in the Rhode Island's corps died?

Answer: 1,685

There were 25,236 fighting men in RI's army, of whom 1,685 died in the Civil War. This is suprisingly high for the smallest state.
3. What C.S.A General was shot three times by friendly fire and later died from pneumonia at the battle of Chancellorsville?

Answer: Stonewall Jackson

Stonewall Jackson and a couple of his officers were returning from a late night recon mission when a North Carolina regiment opened fire on them, thinking they were Union spies. Stonewall was hit three times; he got his arm amputated, and died days later of pneumonia.
4. What was the first land battle of the Civil War?

Answer: Bull Run

Bull Run was the first battle on land in the Civil War. The Confederates won, and Thomas Jackson got his nickname Stonewall from this battle.
5. Which one of these generals did not die as a result of Gettysburg?

Answer: James L. Kemper

James Kemper was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg, but was rescued by his men, Lewis Armistead died after a bullet wound, and William Fender and Paul Semmes both died several days after the battle, but they were mortally wounded at the battle.
6. Which C.S.A commander died at the Battle of Gettysburg when he was blown off his horse during Pickett's charge?

Answer: Richard B. Garnett

General Garnett was blown off his horse at the Battle of Gettysburg when a Union cannon fired directly into him killing him instantly. (His horse survived).
7. Which General was killed by a Union straggler at the Battle of Petersburg?

Answer: Ambrose P. Hill

He was shot by a Union straggler towards the end of the war at the Siege of Petersburg, and died.
8. Who occupied Marye's Heights, and what battle was it at?

Answer: Confederates/Fredericksburg

Marye's Heights is in Fredericksburg, VA and the Confederate line held there position there and won the battle with less than half the casualties that the Union suffered.
9. Where did the Civil War begin and end? (Battle/Place)

Answer: Fort Sumter SC/Appomattox Courthouse V.A

The war officialy began on the firing on Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861 and ended at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865.
10. How many Union and Confederate deaths in total were there(approximately)?

Answer: 360,222 Union/ 258,000 Rebels

Many more Union soldiers died, over 100,000 more because they were invading the Southern states. The Confederates knew the terrain and were mostly on the defensive.
