1. The Union general officers' dress uniforms had buttons that identified their rank. If an officer's buttons on his frock coat were arranged in four groups of two, what was his rank?

Answer: Brig. Gen.

The rank of general could be identified by the arrangement of the double row of buttons down the front. For example a Maj. Gen's. buttons were three groups of three. Also they could use the gilt-edge shoulder straps. If the sack coat was worn the epaulets were not worn.
2. From March 13 to May 16, 1868 this procedure took place in the Senate. What was it?

Answer: Johnson's Impeachment

Opponents in Congress found his reconstruction programs for the south too lenient. The problem was the Tenure of Office Act of 1867, forbidding the President to remove, without approval of the Senate, certain appointed officals. He didn't seek approval to fire Secretary of War Stanton.

The trial lasted 2 months with a vote of 19 acquittal, 35 for conviction-1 vote short for the necessary 2/3 majority for conviction. Kansas Republican, Edmund G. Ross cast the deciding vote.
3. Until May 1864 Union privates were paid $13.00 a month. To what amount was their pay then raised?

Answer: $16.00

At the start of the war both sides paid infantry privates $11.00 a month. The pay for CSA privates was raised to $18.00 in 1864 but inflation had destroyed the CSA economy and thus the raise did no good. In the CSA infantry, monthly pay was as follows: 2nd Lt. $80.00, 1st Lt. $90.00, captain $130.00, major $150.00, Lt. Col. $170.00, Col. $195.00, Brig. Gen. $301.00, Maj. Gen. $350.00, Lt. Gen. $450.00, Gen. $500.00.
4. During Gen. Lee's retreat from Gettysburg this cavalry commander protected the wagons carring the wounded.

The 17 mile-long train was protected and ordered to move and not stop for any reason. Gen. Lee had to abandon 7,000 men who were too badly hurt to be moved and left them to the care of Union surgeons. Interesting note: while passing through Greencastle. Pa. the train was attacked-- by 40 citizens with axes.
5. Which Union soldier shot John Wilkes Booth?

Answer: Corbett

He shot Booth saying he killed him on orders from God. He was placed under arrest, but Stanton decided to praise him and let him go. Corbett only carried a carbine; an autopsy on Booth revealed he was killed by a pistol. In May 1888 Corbett escaped from an aslyum and after a short visit to an old army buddy in Nebraska, he left and was never seen or heard from again.
6. On March 9, 1863 Col. Mosby captured this Union Gen. at Fairfax Court House.

Answer: Stoughton

At the time he did this he was only a Capt. Gen. Lee liked Mosby. Mosby and 29 men appeared in town and went to Stoughton's headquaters where he was sleeping. Mosby awoke him and informed him he was a prisoner.

In 1864 he was discharged from the army. In 1871 Pres. Grant made him a 2nd. Lt. He retired from the army in 1916 and was the last Civil War vetern on the army rolls at the time of his retirement. He died age 85 in San Antonio, Tx.
8. Gen. Pickett was from what state?

Answer: VA

He was a 38-yr-old career soldier. His division spearheaded the assualt on the stonewall at Gettysburg. His division lost almost 7,500 men with 4,000 captured. He never forgave Gen. Lee for ordering the attack.
9. What was the date of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address?

Answer: Nov. 19, 1863

On November 19, 1863, the national cemetery, on the Gettysburg battlefield was to be dedicated. The dedication committee selected Edward Everett as the principal speaker and, as an afterthought, sent an invitation to Pres. Lincoln. He delivered the address in 2 minutes and 15 seconds.
10. CSA Gen. J. E. B. Stuart was killed at what battle?

Answer: Yellow Tavern

On May 11, 1864 moved with 4,500 troopers to get between Union Gen. Sheridan and Richmond. A unhorsed Union private fired a shot that mortally wounded Gen Stuart who died the next day.
