Gen. Stuart was trying to get around the Union army, and attacked a Union cavalry regiment commanded by Brig. Gen. H. Kilpatrick driving it through the streets of the city of Hanover. When Union troops of Brig. Gen. Farnsworth and Brig. Gen. Custer arrived Gen. Stuart was forced to continue north and east in his attempt to join Gen. Lee.

CSA Gen. Van Dorn set out on March 6 to outflank the Union position at Pea Ridge, dividing his army. On March 7 the Union army marched out to meet his advance. Running short of ammunition, he was forced to abandoned the battlefield. The Union Army controlled Missouri for the next two years.

The battle took place May 12-13, 1865. Since March of that year there had been a "gentleman's agreement" that precluded fighting between Union and CSA forces on the Rio Grande. In spite of this agreement Union Col. T.H. Barrett, sent troops to attack CSA outposts and camps. CSA Gen. John Ford formed a battle line fired his artillery forcing the Union troops to retreat.

Maj. Booth's garrison consisted of about 295 white and 262 U.S. colored troops. Gen. Forrest attacked the garrison with about 2,500 cavalry. Maj. Booth was killed during the battle and Maj. Bradford took over command. Maj. Bradford was offered an inconditional surrender but refused it. Gen. Forrest attacked and overran the fort and drove the Union troops into crossfire. Only about 62 of the colored troops survived the battle. Gen. Forrest was accused of massacuring the colored troops.
