Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What disability or deformity did the German Kaiser, Wilhelm II, have?

Answer: Withered arm.

Wilhelm II had a withered left arm. This was caused at birth, due to Erb's Palsy. In order to disguise the fact when he was posing for photos he used to rest his hand on a sword, or hold gloves.

He was the Kaiser of Germany during World War I from 1888-1918 and always wore uniform in public.
2. General "Stonewall" Jackson commanded the Confederate army during the American Civil War. He had a few medical aliments and beliefs. Which of the following facts about Jackson is INCORRECT?

Answer: He was partially blind in the left eye due to a birth defect.

Jackson lost most of his hearing when he was in the artillery.
Jackson believed that his right arm was longer than his left so he would hold his arm up to compensate the blood flow.
There is a legend that Jackson was fond of lemons and that he would eat them to assist with his Dyspepsia (indigestion). But this is not quite true. He did chew on lemons during the war, but this was because they were readily available when enemy food caches were located. Visitors to Jackson's grave leave lemons as a tribute, and the lemon myth lives on!
His favourite fruit was peaches.
3. What body part did General "Stonewall" Jackson lose during the American Civil War and how?

Answer: Left arm; shot by his own troops.

Returning from a recon of his own lines he was shot by his own troops. His left arm was amputated and he was conveyed to a hospital train. He died on the way.
4. What did Mexican General (and President) Antonio López de Santa Anna have buried with full military honours in 1838?

Answer: His leg.

He lost his leg on 5 December, 1838 during a battle with the French. It was given a military burial and was later placed into a shrine. A few years later the leg was stolen during riots. It was never recovered.

His missing leg was replaced with a artificial leg made from wood and cork. In a cruel twist of fate the leg was stolen by an American solider during the Battle of Cerro Gordo (Mexican-American War). The leg can now been seen at the Illinois State Military Museum.

Santa Anna held the Mexican Presidential office eleven times.

He issued the orders to have Davy Crockett and the other soldiers at the Alamo killed.
5. Antonio López de Santa Anna married Inés García in 1825. She subsequently passed away in 1844. Six weeks later the 50 year old Antonio remarried. How old was his next bride?

Answer: 15

His second wife, María Dolores de Tosta, was just 15 when she married Santa Anna.

Mexicans believed he had disrespected the memory of his first wife by marrying María without having the traditional grieving period.
6. In 1896 Lieutenant James Moss commanded a unit in the 25th Infantry of the US Army. What was unusual about his unit?

Answer: They all rode bicycles.

Moss volunteered for the duty of running the 25th Infantry bicycle unit.

The unit was made up of black soldiers (African-American) due to the racial segregation that standard practice in the US Army at the time.

As an experiment, Moss led his troops on a mammoth ride from Fort Missoula, Montana to St. Louis, Missouri. The trip covered about 1,900 miles and took 41 days.
In the end the experiment proved that bicycle riding infantry soldiers was not overly practical.
