Jiang Zemin (born 17 August 1926) served as General Secretary of the CPC from 1989 to 2002, as Chairman of the Central Military Commission of the CPC from 1989 to 2004 and as President of the PRC from 1993 to 2003.

Answer: Deng Xiaoping

Deng Xiaoping (1904-1997) passed away at 95 after a long term illness. In 1920, he went to France to attend middle schools. In 1922, while still in Europe, he joined the CCP. In 1926, he left France for Moscow to study at Sun Yat-sen University. From 1937 to 1945 he took part in the war of resistance against the Japanese as a political commissar.

Hong Kong was made a Special Administrative Region to be managed by a designated Chief Executive. The Chinese government agreed to a "One Country, Two Systems Policy" for the next 50 years.

On 20 December 1999, Macao was officially returned to China. Macau became the 2nd Special Administrative Region after Hong Kong. Macau was the last held colony by Portugal.

On 19 December 2008, the first direct cargo ship arrived via a direct route to mainland China since 1949. The cargo was shipped from Kaoshiung, Taiwan to port of Xiamen, Fujian province. The ship left Kaohsiung in the evening and arrived at Xiamen in the morning. In the past the cargo would take about 7 days as it had to be re-routed via Hong Kong.

Shenzhen Airlines made the first direct flight from Shenzhen Airport to Taipei. Flights were routed via Hong Kong or Macau in the past.
