1. During the Civil War who were the 'Yellowhammers'?

Answer: Troops from Alabama

Yellowhammers were Confederate troops from Alabama. The nickname was gained when sport was made of the bright gold facings on their uniforms. It was a name that stuck with all soldiers from Alabama.
2. What were 'White Washed Rebs'?

Answer: Turncoats

Any Rebel soldier of the Confederacy who renounced the rebellion and swore an oath of allegiance to the United States was a white washed reb, or turncoat. They were also called Galvanized Yankees. Most of them were sent west to fight hostile Indians because no one trusted their 'conversion'.
3. During the Civil War, what did Confederate soldiers call meat they could not identify?

Answer: Mule meat

Any meat source that could not be identified, was labeled mule meat. During this era, eating mules was unheard of, no matter how desperate the situation was. Nonetheless, mules were consumed.
4. While camping out, what was the 'mud method' used for?

Answer: Cooking

The mud method was used when cooking small game. First, you roll your squirrel, racoon or possum in a mud ball insuring that at the carcass has at least an inch of mud covering it. Throw it on a hot fire and let it bake until the mud is hard on the outside. Crack open the mudball and enjoy your meal. Eating the entrails is optional.
5. Why were the terms 'hayfoot' and 'strawfoot' used in training some recruits?

Answer: In order to teach left from right

The terms hayfoot and strawfoot were used to teach raw recruits the difference between left and right. Keep in mind that illiteracy was an accepted fact and pretty common in some Southern outfits.

Answer: An outhouse

An "Irish shanty" was an outhouse. This was not the day when people were concerned about political correctness!

Answer: Bad luck

Anyone who was unfortunate to be labeled a Jonah, was considered bad luck to be around. Especially during picket duty or in a firing line.
8. When something was 'jayhawked', what happened to it?

Answer: It was stolen

Anything that was jayhawked was definitely stolen. When someone used that term, it left doubt as to what had happened to something that was missing. To accuse someone of this was to invite a fist fight.

Answer: Drunk as a skunk

Someone who was wallpapered has had too much whiskey to drink. "That varmit Cletus sho' was wallpapered when he staggered in heah".

Answer: Diarrhea

Poor sanitation, living rough and a dismal diet of raw pork and soggy cornbread was sure to bring on a case of the 'Virginia two step'. This condition is better known as diarrhea. The cure for this was ... whiskey!
