Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. D-Day was part of a large scale operation. What was the code-name of this operation?

Answer: Overlord

Operation Overlord was the code-name for the invasion of Europe. Operation Neptune would be the code-name for the amphibious landings.
2. Who was the supreme commander of the operation?

Answer: Dwight Eisenhower

He was supreme commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces, which consisted mainly of U.S., British and Canadian forces, together with some Poles and Free French. Montgomery was, however, commander-in-chief of ground forces.
3. Where did the Germans believe the attack would take place?

Answer: Pas de Calais

Operation Fortitude (part of the larger Operation Bodyguard) successfully convinced Nazi Germany that the attack would come in the Pas de Calais.
4. Which of the following was NOT one of the code-names of beaches that would be landed on?

Answer: Shield

Juno, Omaha, Sword, Gold, Utah, and Point-du-Hoc were all landing sites.
5. Which of the following was unusual?

Answer: DD tanks

Duplex drive tanks, or DD tanks used a floatation screen to "swim" through the water. This surprised the defenders very much
6. Which day did D-Day take place?

Answer: June 6th,1944

The invasion had been postponed due to bad weather, but it was then decided to go ahead on June 6th. Further delay would have involved the risk of a very long postponement as the Allies needed a very low tide indeed (early in the morning, too) in order to see obstacles on the beaches.
7. Which beach ended up with the most casualties?

Answer: Omaha

It is estimated that about 3,000 of the US troops were killed and substantial quantities of supplies and equipment were lost.
8. The Pointe du Hoc stood out from the other invasion sites. Why?

Answer: It was not a beach but a sheer cliff that had to be scaled

The US Army Rangers were used specifically for the mission of taking the Point Du Hoc and eventually providing assistance to the US Army Corps after sweeping a few towns and artillery positions.
9. What did the "D" in D-day stand for?

Answer: It was simply the first letter of the word "day" marking an important event

Other major Allied amphibious in World War II also had their D-days but the Normandy landings have gone down as simply D-day: it was the largest amphibious assault ever and marked a key turning point in the war in Western Europe.

Some military historians believe the D in D-Day stood for "disembarkment".
10. Was the D-Day a success?

Answer: Yes, but at the cost of many casualties

D-Day was a great success and paved the way to ending the war! Casualties are estimated at about 20,000 in total on both sides (combined).
