They got together after seeing Royston Ellis read works by San Franciscan Poets. They felt true creative artists should produce original work. They decided to work at making Liverpool famous.

The Dissenters spent a lot of time at the 'Jac', as did Rory Storm and the Hurricanes and another group - Cass and the Cassanovas. Hesselberg owned a music store, Ashcroft was a fellow student of Bill Harry, and James was a firm of printers.

The name came to him at 2 am one morning. It had nothing to do with the music, but was inspired by the sound of a policeman walking his 'beat'. As the surrounding region was laden with acts, "Merseybeat" embraced the Wirral, Birkenhead, Crosby, Southport, Widnes and Runcorn.
