Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1966 William Masters and Virginia Johnson published a popular book on what subject?

Answer: Sex

Masters, a gynecologist, and Johnson, a psychology researcher, got together in 1957 to study human sexuality. While earlier studies on the subject by Alfred Kinsey were based on surveys, Masters and Johnson observed sexual activity in a laboratory. Although intended for the medical community, their book, "Human Sexual Response" was a bestseller.

They also published "Human Sexual Inadequacy" in 1970.
2. Ernesto Miranda became a household name when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that despite his confession to kidnapping and rape, he was not properly warned of his constitutional rights. What city's police department failed to give a proper "Miranda" warning?

Answer: Phoenix, Arizona

The reversal of the conviction did not automatically set Ernesto Miranda free. It merely held that his confession could not be used against him. Miranda was tried again, without the confession, convicted, and served a total of 11 years in prison. He was paroled in 1972, but was in and out of jail until he was stabbed to death in a 1976 bar fight. Ironically, the suspect in Ernesto's killing exercised his right to remain silent after being read the "Miranda" warning, and was released. No one was ever charged in the murder.
3. On a hot August afternoon in Texas, a sniper began a 96 minute shooting spree which he left 45 random strangers dead and wounded. Where did this tragic massacre take place?

Answer: University of Texas

A heavily armed, former Eagle scout and ex-U.S. Marine, Charles Whitman, took up position atop the 307 foot Texas Tower in Austin, and began randomly firing his high-powered rifle. An hour and half later, 14 people were dead, and dozens wounded. Whitman was ultimately gunned down by the police.

The massacre on the University of Texas campus horrified a nation that was still in shock over the slaying of nine young nurses in Chicago the week before the Austin tragedy.
4. Between 1964 and 1966, Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers won three straight National Football league titles, culminating with a 35-10 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl I. Where did Lombardi coach immediately before taking the Green Bay job?

Answer: New York Giants

After five years as an assistant coach at West Point Military Academy, Lombardi joined New York Giants coach Jim Lee Howell's staff as an offensive assistant coach. In 1958 he became head coach of the lowly Packers, who had won only one game the previous season. Three years later the Packers were the NFL champions, and their dynasty was established.
5. Americans flocked to see Sergio Leone's "Italian western", "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly". Clint Eastwood played 'the Good' and Eli Wallach was 'the Ugly'. Who played 'the Bad'?

Answer: Lee Van Cleef

With squinty eyes and a cold, steel-like stare, Van Cleef was a classic action villain. His numerous film appearances include roles as one of Frank Miller's gang members in "High Noon", and one of Liberty Valance's henchmen in "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance".
6. What 'trashy' Jacqueline Susann novel was the best selling work of fiction in 1966?

Answer: Valley of the Dolls

One of the 'pre-Harry Potter' best-selling novels of all time, "Valley of the Dolls" has sold over 10 million copies. It was made into a 1967 film and a 1981 made-for-TV movie.
7. Who were Davy, Micky, Mike and Peter?

Answer: The Monkees

Inspired by the Beatles' movie "Hard Day's Night", American television producers wanted to create a series about a struggling band. The series was named "The Monkees", and it became a huge hit. The band, "The Monkees", went on to become one of the most popular groups of the 1960s, at one time outselling the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.

Their hit, "I'm a Believer" topped the "Billboard" Top 10 for 1966.
8. What 21 year old actress did 50 year old Frank Sinatra marry on July 19, 1966?

Answer: Mia Farrow

Few people were surprised when this union ended in less than two years. After divorcing the middle-aged saloon singer, Farrow, the former Allison Mackenzie on television's "Peyton Place", went on to storied relationships with Andre Previn and Woody Allen, which produced 14 children, 9 of whom were adopted.
9. What was "Daktari"?

Answer: Television series

"Daktari", the Swahili word for 'doctor' was a popular series about an American veterinarian and his daughter living on an African game preserve. It starred Marshall Thompson and his pets, Clarence, the cross-eyed lion, and Judy, a chimp.
10. What civil rights activist was shot by a sniper on June 6, 1966 while on the "March Against Fear" from Memphis, Tennessee to Jackson, Mississippi?

Answer: James Meredith

With the assistance of federal troops in 1962, Meredith became the first African-American student at the University of Mississippi. He recovered from his 1966 gun shot wound, and later received a law degree from Columbia University in 1968. Later in life, Meredith joined the Republican party and, much to the disdain of civil rights leaders, served on the staff of arch-conservative North Carolina Senator Jesse Helms.
