Julius Caesar was assassinated by a group of conspirators, including his friend Brutus, while he was attending a meeting of the Senate. Caesar was there supposedly to sign an exile recall petition of the brother of Tillius Cimber. His assassins surrounded him and stabbed him. Mark Antony, a friend of Caesar, had learned of the assassination plot and tried to stop it, but he was detained and failed to do so.

Erik the Red was exiled from Iceland for three years for a murder he may or may not have committed. During his exile, he landed in Greenland and stayed there until his exile expired. He named the island Greenland so as to be attractive to potential settlers.

When Queen Isabella of Castile married King Ferdinand of Aragon, the two kingdoms became a loosely united Spain. Together, Ferdinand and Isabella ruled jointly and began the Spanish Age of Exploration by funding Christopher Columbus. They also energetically enforced Catholicism in Spain and expelled the Moors and the Jews.

Christopher Columbus was searching for a route to the East Indies. When he landed in what is now the Bahamas, he named it San Salvador. Despite popular belief, Columbus did not discover that the earth was round and not flat. It was already widely known that the Earth is round and globes dating back to before Columbus' voyages depict a round earth with the Americas missing.

Davy Crockett was killed while defending the Alamo. The circumstances of his death are uncertain and disputed. It is known that a few Texans had surrendered, which angered Santa Anna of Mexico, who is sometimes called the Napoleon of the West. Santa Anna ordered all of the survivors to be executed, including Crockett.

There were rumors that Crockett was one of the ones who surrendered and was executed, although there is not evidence of this. Another rumor spread that Crockett died after killing several Mexican soldiers, but there is no evidence to support this claim either.

Alexandra Feodorovna, wife of Tsar Nicholas II, was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria and a carrier of haemophilia. She passed it onto her son, Alexei, who often suffered because of it. On October 9, 1912, Alexei was suffering badly and near death until a friend of Alexandra introduced her to Rasputin, a local mystic and "mad monk." When Alexei recovered, Alexandra became indebted to Rasputin.

Albert Frederick Arthur George, better known as King George VI, ascended to the British throne after his brother, King Edward VIII, abdicated in order to marry a twice-divorced American woman named Wallis Simpson. Albert had not expected to become king.

Vidkun Quisling was a notorious Norwegian traitor during World War II who led a Nazi puppet government beginning in 1942. His collobaration with Nazis goes back to 1940. Quisling was executed via firing squad on October 24, 1945. He maintained his innocence, even though high-ranking German Nazis testified against him. His name has become synonymous with traitors and he is often called the Benedict Arnold of Norway.

The stamp was produced by the British for propaganda purposes and was *not* issued by the Norwegian postal service.
