Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1965 the Arab countries received the modern Mig 21 Fishbed fighter from the USSR. To face them, Israel tried to acquire a modern combat aircraft. Which one did they finally acquire from France?

Answer: Mirage III

Israel did actually fly Super Mysteres and Mysteres IV. The Mirage V was a sub-type ordered by Israel according to the combat experience of 1967. Ironically, the relation between France and Israel deteriorated and France finally sold the Mirage V to Libya.
2. The Israeli Air Force had a stroke of luck in the process of developing air tactics to counter the Arab Mig 21s. What happened?

Answer: An Iraqi pilot defected to Israel in 1966 with his Mig 21

The Iraqi authorities did not realize what had happened and thought the plane had crashed.
3. The well planned Israeli attack included the destruction of Egyptian air strips with Durandal anti-runway bombs. Nevertheless, the Sinai bases were not bombed with that weapon. Why?

Answer: Israel planned to capture those bases intact

Durandal bombs penetrate the concrete strips a few centimeters before exploding. Israel did actually capture the Sinai Egyptian bases.
4. The USSR gave its Arab allies a number of SA 2 anti-aircraft missiles, but those weapons did not score a single kill. Why?

Answer: Israel made low-level attacks and the SA 2 is almost useless under 3.000 ft

The SA 2 was lethal in Vietnam against the high-level attacks by B52 bombers. However, it was relatively easy for a low-level intruder to avoid that massive missile.
5. Egyptian anti-aircraft batteries in Sinai did not fire against the first and second wave of Israeli attacks. Why?

Answer: A high ranking Egyptian officer was flying in the area

Egyptian Field Marshal Ali Amer was inspecting military bases in the Sinai and (to prevent a mistake) air defenses had been forbidden to fire against any aircraft in the peninsula.
6. The Egyptians and Syrians tried to conceal the destruction of the bulk of their air forces, not only to their countrymen but also to another neutral Arab leader in order to bring his country to the war. Who was he?

Answer: King Hussein II of Jordan

Although Israel avoided any hostile act against Jordan to keep the country neutral, King Hussein believed that the Arabs were winning and he and that his country could not afford staying neutral.
7. Jordan attacked an Israeli air base as one of its first acts in the war. Which base was it?

Answer: Nathanya

The Jordanian Hawker Hunters that carried out the mission did not take off for a second mission. The Israeli Air Force caught them on their way back from the attack and destroyed all of them.
8. Israel could not afford a defensive war. One of the Egyptian air bases was only 4-5 minutes away of Tel Aviv (by air). Which was that base?

Answer: El Arish

El Arish was home of a powerful air detachment and was the first Israeli target in the air strikes.
9. The Jordanian Air Force flew old Hawker Hunters. Nevertheless a few days before the war 36 brand new combat aircraft had arrived in Amman. What kind of aircraft were they?

Answer: American F 104 Starfighter

Given the fact that Jordanian pilots were not properly trained to fly those aircraft, King Hussein asked the American pilots who had brought them to Jordan to fly them back to their country of origin, for the time being.
10. Israel made substantial territorial gains in the war. One of them was abandoned in 1982 following an agreement with an Arab country. What was that territory?

Answer: Sinai Peninsula (Egypt)

This was in accordance with the Camp David Peace Agreement of 1979.
