Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I defeated a rival at Actium and built on my uncle's work. Who am I?

Answer: Octavian

Octavian defeated Mark Antony in Egypt. His reign started the Pax Romana, a long 200-year period of (relative) peace and he is generally regarded as the first Roman emperor.
2. I made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire. Who am I?

Answer: Theodosius

In 380 AD, Theodosius declared Trinitarian (Nicene) Christianity the sole religion of the Empire. Just under seventy years earlier, had Constantine become a Christian and, together with Licinius, issued the Edict of Milan (313), which made Christianity a permitted religion in the Empire.

Theodosius went further much and banned paganism. What's more, he specified the version of Christianity that he wanted and made heresy a punishable offence.
3. I am Titus' brother and ruled for fifteen years. Who am I?

Answer: Domitian

Domitian (reigned AD81-96) strenghtened the border defenses of the Empire. He despised the Senate and really never asked any advice from it. He was assassinated by the Praetorian Guard in AD 96.
4. I built many baths in Rome. Who am I?

Answer: Caracalla

Caracalla reigned from AD 211-AD 217. He, like his father, Severus, had to raise taxes to pay the army. Caracalla also paid the barbarian tribes to stay away from the Empire.
5. I killed my family and was rumored to be responsible for a great fire. Who am I?

Answer: Nero

Nero began to rule when he was sixteen when Agrippina allowed him to rule. He ruled sensibly for five years, but then he became insane and was assassinated in AD 68.
6. I sub-divided the Empire. Who am I?

Answer: Diocletian

Diocletian (reigned AD 284-311) persecuted the Christians and killed many. He divided the empire because he thought it was too large and unwieldy for one man to rule.
7. I ruled directly after the Pax Romana ended. Who am I?

Answer: Commodus

After AD 180, Rome had a hard time doing things. Commodus (reigned AD180-192) became the emperor and was assassinated like many other emperors before him.
8. I was notorious for my insanity and people know me from the soldier's boots I wore. Who am I?

Answer: Caligula

Caligula (reigned AD37-41) was the first to be assassinated by the Praetorian Guard. Whether or not he actually made his horse a senator or whether this particular story was just hostile propaganda, is unclear.
9. During my rule, Rome seemed to be at its height. Who am I?

Answer: Antoninus

Antoninus followed Hadrian. There were no revolts during the reign of Antoninus. He governed, without ever leaving Italy, from 138 AD to 161 AD, making his reign relatively long by Roman standards.
10. The barbarians shattered the security of the empire during my reign. Who am I?

Answer: Honorius

Honorius (reigned AD 395-423) saw the Western Empire succumb to barbarian invasions. He moved the capital from Milan to Ravenna in 402, as the latter was less vulnerable to attack. In AD410 Rome itself was sacked by the Visigoths under Alaric and the Romans withdrew from Britain. Disease and famine affected the population. For the first time, people were beginning to think that Rome could not protect them.
