Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these has NO Spanish connections?

Answer: Margaret Tudor

Margaret Tudor was English, so she is the odd one out.
2. Which of these did NOT have red hair?

Answer: Anne Boleyn

Anne Boleyn had dark hair, while the rest are noted for their Tudor red hair.
3. Which was the only title NOT given to Robert Dudley by Elizabeth I?

Answer: Duke of Norfolk

The Dukes of Norfolk during the Tudor Dynasty were Thomas Howard and his grandson ... Thomas Howard. As Roman Catholics they were out of favour in the reign of Elizabeth I.
4. Who in this group wasn't executed?

Answer: Marie de Guise

Marie de Guise was Mary Queen of Scot's mother, and since she died of an illness (probably dropsy), she does not fit the category.
5. Most of England believed Anne Boleyn was unfaithful, and many people had their own theories for who was the father of Anne's daughter. Which of these men was never a possible candidate for being Elizabeth's father?

Answer: Henry VII

Henry VIII, of course, really was Elizabeth's father. Mary I liked to think Mark Smeaton was, and spread it around to the court. George Boleyn was accused at his trial of hinting that he was Elizabeth's father 'because Henry could not have any kids'. Henry VII died long before she was born, so he doesn't work.
6. Who was the only one out of this group who never caught smallpox?

Answer: William Carey

Smallpox was in many cases deadly, but all of the people listed above survived. William Carey had the sweating sickness, another deadly illness in Tudor times. He died from it in the summer of 1528, during a severe outbreak of the sickness. Even Anne Boleyn caught it, although she survived.
7. Which person was NOT condemned as a traitor?

Answer: Henry Carey

Thomas Wyatt and Robert Devereux both incited rebellion, and Thomas Seymour attempted to kidnap King Edward VI. Henry Carey was loyal to his queen and cousin, Elizabeth I.
8. The Tudor period was notorious for its 'legal' cruelty and thousands of people were executed during the 118 years of the Tudor Dynasty. Which place was never used for these executions?

Answer: Greenwich Palace

Protestants were burned at Smithfield during the reign of "Bloody" Mary I; Mary Queen of Scots was beheaded at Fotheringhay Castle, and hundreds of people were executed on Tower Hill, including Katherine Howard and Anne Boleyn's lovers. No one (that I know of) was executed at Greenwich Palace.
9. Which of these things can NOT be considered "white"?

Answer: Katherine of Aragon's Badge

The Tudor colors were green and white, the white rose was the emblem of the House of York, and Whitehall Palace was the white Tudor "Hall". Katherine of Aragon's badge was a pomegranate, which is a reddish color.
10. Which does not belong in this group of French things?

Answer: Philip II

Francis I was a French King during the Tudor Dynasty, Calais was taken from England by the French in 1558. Charles V was the Holy Roman Emperor and Spanish by birth. In the Edict of Nantes (1598) Henri IV granted toleration to French Protestants, subject to various conditions.
11. All of these men had a wife who had been married once before, except for who?

Answer: Guilford Dudley

William Stafford's wife Mary Boleyn was married to William Carey, Robert Dudley's third wife, Lettice Knollys, to Walter Devereux, and Charles Brandon's third wife, Mary Tudor, to Louis XII.
12. Each of the wives of Henry VIII had a badge. Which was NOT an item on any of the badges?

Answer: Apple

Katherine Parr had a rose, Jane Seymour had a phoenix, and Katherine Howard had a girl.
13. Which was NOT a famous Jane?

Answer: The sister of Edward VI

Edward's oldest sister was Mary. The others were Lady Jane Grey, Jane Seymour, and Jane Guilford (yes, that is where the first name comes from).
14. Elizabeth I had several nicknames, but one of these belongs to someone else. Which one is NOT a nickname for the last Tudor monarch?

Answer: Bloody Mary

"Bloody Mary" was the nickname of Mary I.
15. Tudor men and women didn't wear exactly what we do now. What doesn't fit in this group of Tudor articles of clothing?

Answer: Sock

They didn't wear socks in England back in the sixteenth century.

Answer: Katherine Grey

Katherine Grey was Lady Jane Grey's sister, and had she stayed queen, Katherine would have succeeded her to the throne.
17. Elizabeth had several suitors. Who shouldn't be included with these potential husbands?

Answer: Robert Cecil

Robert Cecil came a little late in her reign, when she had basically accepted she would never marry.
18. Which title did Henry VIII not hold?

Answer: Holy Roman Emperor

Henry VIII (King of England, Ireland, and parts of France) was given the title "Defender of the Faith" by the Pope only years before establishing himself as "Supreme Governor of the Church of England". Charles V was the Holy Roman Emperor.
19. Which event did NOT happen in September?

Answer: Henry VIII becomes King

Katherine Parr died on September 7, 1548. Elizabeth I was born on September 7, 1533. Amy Robsart was found dead on September 8, 1560. Henry VIII became King on April 22, 1509.
20. Although Henry VIII is known to have been desperate for sons, he did have three. Which person should not be with these royal children?
