A converted World War II-era cargo ship, the U.S.S. Pueblo was a Navy intelligence-gathering vessel. On January 23, 1968 the Pueblo was seized and captured by North Korean ships, and the crew was held captive for 11 months.

James Marshall Hendrix was born in Seattle, Washington in 1942. After an injury cut short his U.S. Army paratrooper career, he turned to music. Known for setting guitars on fire during performances, his hits included "Hey Joe" and "Purple Haze". He died in England of drug related causes on September 18, 1970.

Millions of Americans were enjoying a hotly contested football game between the New York Jets and the Oakland Raiders on November 17, 1968. The Jets were leading 32-29 with 50 seconds left in the game. The game was running over its allotted network time and, in the middle of a big play, NBC switched to the film "Heidi" at its scheduled time. Football fans missed an exciting 42 seconds in which Oakland scored two touchdowns to win the game 43-32.

When North Vietnam proposed a cease-fire for the 1968 holiday season. U.S. and South Vietnamese troops lowered their guard, and were taken by surprise by a massive military assault. This became known as the Tet Offensive, and proved to be a turning-point in Vietnam, as many top officials came to regard the war as "unwinnable".

Commemorating the 250th anniversary of the founding of San Antonio, "HemisFair '68" was an international exhibition on the theme of "Confluence of Civilizations in the Americas". Anchored by the 622 foot Tower of the Americas, over thirty nations participated with pavilions and exhibits.

The name of the album was simply "The Beatles". The jacket cover was predominately white, and the musical masterpiece, which sold over two million copies in its first week of release, became known as the "White Album".
