Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which relatively new rock group sang "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" in 1965?

Answer: The Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones first charted in the U.S. in 1964 and in '65 they had a number one rock hit for the year with the song "Satisfaction". The group had chart topping hits for nearly 40 years, with their last being in 2002.
2. Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello starred in a 1965 movie; the fifth film of the "Beach Party" film series. What was the name of this rather mindless movie that was panned by the critics?

Answer: Beach Blanket Bingo

While all of these were in the Beach Party genre of teen movies, Beach Blanket Bingo was the only one released in 1965. Annette Funicello was not the first female considered for the role. That dubious honor would have belonged to Nancy Sinatra. Shortly after filming began, she decided to opt out, due to the fact that a feature of the film concerned a kidnapping.

Her younger brother, Frank Sinatra, Jr. had been kidnapped just months prior to filming beginning and she could not deal with that recent memory that the movie brought back to her mind. (Her brother was released after Frank Sinatra, Sr. paid the ransom demanded by the kidnappers.)
3. "When a fox is in the bottle where the tweetle beetles battle with their paddles in a puddle on a noodle-eating poodle..." -- From which 1965 children's book by Dr. Seuss was this line taken?

Answer: Fox in Socks

"Fox in Socks" by Dr. Seuss was first published in 1965. With increasingly difficult tongue-twisters as the story line progresses, one of the main characters, Knox, begins to complain of their complexities. Fox simply grows more verbose and more difficult to understand.
4. Cherilyn Sarkisian became a well-known cultural icon along with her partner (and later, husband) as they performed as a singing duo, striking it big with 1965's, "I Got You Babe". By what name might she be better known?

Answer: Cher

Cher and her first husband, Sonny Bono, were quite popular throughout the 60s and on into the 70s. She began her solo career almost simultaneously while singing with her partner and husband, Sonny. They later divorced in 1975 and Cher remarried four days after the divorce was final; this time to another musician, Gregg Allman.

After that marriage bit the dust, she lived with "KISS" lead singer, Gene Simmons, for about two years.
5. On March 8, 1965, the first U.S. combat troops were sent to Vietnam. Which type of military unit did they belong to?

Answer: Marines

While American involvement had been ongoing in Vietnam for nearly a decade in the form of military advisers, the U.S. Marine Corp sent the first combat troops (members of the 9th Marine Expeditionary Brigade) into the country at Da Nang on that nation's south central coast.
6. Which famous British leader died on 24 January 1965?

Answer: Winston Churchill

Winston Churchill's political career began as a Conservative member of Parliament (MP), in 1900. Having served as the First Lord of the Admiralty during World War I, he later became Britain's Prime Minister in May 1940 and saw England through its darkest days and hours of World War II.
7. What movie, with a story line that featured a nun who was originally at Nonnberg Abbey in Salzburg in 1938, became the highest-grossing film of 1965, having been released on March 2 of that year?

Answer: The Sound of Music

The musical, "The Sound of Music", has roots based in the reality of the actual von Trapp family of Austria. Maria von Trapp's great-grandson was interviewed by ABC TV in 2015 and stated that while the film focuses on the family's musical gifts and occupation as traveling singers, he was amazed at the continuing popularity of the musical. "After they came to the U.S., they were broke, because they had to leave everything behind in Austria.

They decided on Vermont; it reminded them most of Austria with the green mountains and all.

They bought a farm and turned that into music camp."
8. Who was "born" when he popped out of a can for the first time in November 1965?

Answer: Poppin' Fresh

This icon announced his 'birth' with the statement, "I'm Poppin' Fresh, the Pillsbury Doughboy!" That, and the phrase "Nothin' says lovin' like something from the oven, and Pillsbury says it best", have become a raging successful advertising tool for Pillsbury since 1965.
9. We were introduced to "Cavity Sam" in 1965. With what children's board game was he associated?

Answer: Operation

Operation is a battery operated game that required kids to perform "surgery" of sorts on the man lying on the board/operating table. One little goof and zap! The alarm went off, Sam's nose lit up red, and usually further startled the unsteady hand that had brushed against the sides of the cavity opening of the portion of the body they were working on. What fun!
10. The twelfth and final novel in the James Bond series was published in 1965, eight months after the author's death. Which Bond novel did Ian Fleming write last?

Answer: The Man With the Golden Gun

All of the titles were in the James Bond series, but in the novel, "The Man With the Golden Gun", a brain-washed Bond was sent back to England to kill a character code named "M". After he was de-programmed from the brainwash techniques, M sent him to Jamaica on a seemingly impossible mission.

This novel was not fleshed out as well as Fleming's other novels because he had a tendency to do so in the final writing and had passed away before that could happen. The task fell to others and they were not as fastidious to detail as Ian Fleming had been and the novel was considered to be an inferior one as a result. Nonetheless, it did become a best seller in 1965.
