Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1471, the armies of two rival kings met at Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire. The outcome of the battle decided who would rule England. Who were these kings?

Answer: Edward IV York and Henry VI Lancaster

Edward IV won with the help of his two brothers. Henry VI was imprisoned in the Tower of London, where he was later murdered. His death marked the end of the pure Lancastrian bloodline and its royal family.
2. Before the battle of Teweksbury, Henry VI Lancaster was in desperate need for heirs, so he tried to strengthen his position by marrying his half-brother Edmund to the wealthy Margaret Beaufort. What was Henry's relation to Margaret?

Answer: She was his second cousin.

The marriage did not save Henry, but its offspring would prove to be a decisive variable in the eventual fusion between the Houses of York and Lancaster.
3. In his first reign (1461-1470), Edward IV depended highly on a small circle of supporters, most notably his cousin, Richard of Warwick whose nickname was ___________.

Answer: The King Maker

The pair broke up when Edward seceretly married an English woman rather than a French princess whose betrothal to Edward was planned by Warwick. Furthermore, Edward sought an alliance with Burgundy rather than France, which was Warwick's preference. The king was also reluctant to allow his brothers George and Richard to marry Warwick's daughters, Isabel and Anne.
4. Edward IV had secretly married. She was called "the most beautiful woman in the Island of Britain" with "heavy-lidded eyes like a dragon". Source: Wikipedia. Who was she?

Answer: Elizabeth Woodville

His marriage to Elizabeth Woodville (also spelled Wydeville) took place secretly at the bride's family home in Northamptonshire. By 1469, Warwick had formed an alliance with Edward's jealous brother George, to whom he married his elder daughter Isabel.

They defeated Edward's forces at the Battle of Edgecote, capturing the King and ruling in his name for a few months. Soon, however, Warwick, found guilty of treason, fled to France where he joined the forces of Henry VI and his wife Margaret of Anjou.

They defeated Edward and placed Henry on the throne. However, in 1471 Edward defeated Warwick at the Battle of Barnet, and later Henry VI at the Battle of Tewkesbury.
5. Elizabeth Woodville provided Edward with ten children, of whom three were males. Two of them were named Edward and Richard. They were later known as the two Princes in the Tower.

Answer: True

Edward IV got what he had always dreamed of - an heir. However, that retrogressed (pushed back) his brothers in the line for the throne ...

(Elizabeth Woodville gave Edward IV ten children, three boys and seven girls.
1. Elizabeth, born 1466

6. Edward IV's younger brother George presented a threat to the king. George would eventually become immensely rich by confiscating this noble's lands. He became even wealthier than the king himself. What title did he hold?

Answer: Duke of Clarence

Duke of Clarence is a title which has been traditionally awarded to junior members of the English (and later, British) royal family. George tried to put himself first in the line for the throne by claiming that Edward's marriage to Elizabeth was invalid, thus making Edward's son bastards. George was rich, but not rich enough to avoid Edward's wrath and a treason trial.

He was found guilty and was executed.
7. When did Edward IV die?

Answer: 1483

After he died, his eldest son, Edward, was proclaimed Edward V. His reign was dominated by the influence of his uncle Richard, Duke of Gloucester.
8. Richard, Duke of Gloucester, who faithfully and dutifully served his eldest brother, decided it was time to seize the crown. He imprisoned Edward V and Richard, his nephews, and summoned Parliament to decide on the succession. What decision was reached?

Answer: The marriage between Edward and Elizabeth was found invalid.

This decision made Edward V and his brother bastards and invalid heirs. Richard, therefore, seized the crown as the only legitimate heir.
9. What is the best description of Richard III?

Answer: paranoid and nervous

He had a nervous tick and was constantly biting his lower lip. He also constantly pulled his dagger in and out of its casing all the time. Diagnosis - chronic neurosis.
10. Assuming that her sons were murdered, Elizabeth Woodville started to seek revenge. She allied herself with Margaret Beaufort. Through whom did they exchange secret letters planning a revolt?

Answer: Through their physician.

The plan was to challenge Richard on the battlefield. The challenger would be Margaret's son, Henry Tudor ...
