Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Before conquering the rest of Italy the Savoy Kings reigned as Kings of ___________?

Answer: Sardinia.

The title of King came to the Savoy monarchs with the acquisition of Sardinia in the 18th century. Savoy was their starting point in the Middle Ages. Piedmont was their main province and Turin their capital until 1865.
2. Who was the first King of Italy in 1861?

Answer: Vittorio Emanuele II.

He retained his numeral because he thought his main allegiance was to the dynasty and not to the nation.
Vittorio Emanuele I was King of Sardinia after the Napoleonic wars.
Carlo Alberto was the first of the Carignano branch of the family and father of V. E. II.
Umberto I was his son and heir.
3. Who was the last King of Italy?

Answer: Umberto II.

Arduino was Marquess of Ivrea in the 10th century and crowned king of Italy; he fought the German Emperors and is viewed as the first "Italian" king of Italy.
Vittorio Emanuele III was the father of Umberto II.
Vittorio Emanuele IV has never been King. He would be king now if Italy weren't be a Republic.
4. Why was Umberto II nicknamed the "May King"?

Answer: He reigned only in May.

His father abdicated one month prior to the referendum that decided that the Kingdom of Italy would become the Italian Republic, June 2nd 1946.
5. Where does the would-be heir to the crown of Italy live as of October 2002?

Answer: In exile.

He and his son are exiled under the Constitution of the Italian Republic and so (at least in principle) are all their male heirs. However, in the summer of 2002 the Italian Parliament amended the law, so that they can at least visit Italy.
6. What did Vittorio Emanuele III do in September 1943 after the Cassibile armistice between Italian and Allied armed forces?

Answer: He fled as fast as he could

That probably cost him his throne. His greatest error seems to have been his failure to organize the struggle against the relatively few Germans that were stationed in Italy before the armistice. Making a timely arrangement with Anglo-American forces could have spared his kingdom two years of bitter war and desolation.
7. What did Vittorio Emanuele III do wrong in the view of most Italians?

Answer: All of them.

These are the major allegations that caused the "Constituent Fathers" to decree exile for the Savoy male heirs.
8. King Vittorio Emanuele was for a short period of time Emperor of ___________?

Answer: Ethiopia

He acceded to the title of Emperor of this African country after its conquest by Mussolini in the mid 1930s.
9. What was the first capital of the Savoy states until the 16th Century?

Answer: Chambery.

The main city of Savoie, now in France. Geneva was indeed part of the Savoy domains in the middle ages. Turin was the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia and of Italy until 1865. Palermo was under Savoy rule for a brief period of time in the 18th century and of course, as part of Italy, from 1861-1946.
10. Which French town was under Savoy rule for many centuries until 1859?

Answer: Nice.

Nizza, as it is called in Italian, was given together with Savoy to Emperor Napoleon III in order to obtain his help in fighting Austria in the Second Independance War that ended in the conquest of Lombardy and sparked upheavals in Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna and Marche.
That, together with Garibaldi's conquest of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies ended in the birth of modern, united Italy.
