Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The race to space was accelerated by President Kennedy in the early 60's. The President challenged the US's best minds to find the technology to put a human on the moon, and fly him back to Earth safely. The world started competing to see who would be first to achieve this. The first man in space never touched the moon, but still earned the title of first human in outer space. Which country was he from?

Answer: Soviet Union

Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin won the title of being the first human in outer space. Gagarin orbited the Earth for 108 minutes, and then ejected and landed by parachute. Three weeks later, Alan Shepard would be the first American in space. America, however, succeeded in putting the first humans on the moon, captured in the famous footage of Neil Armstrong taking the first steps. "One small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind!"
2. After this very sour grape had lost a huge war involving all the world's major powers, he committed suicide before he could be punished for killing millions.

Answer: Hitler

Adolf Hitler was responsible for starting World War II, and for the Holocaust, in which an estimated six million Jews were killed. Of course, once he lost the war, he would have been in a lot of trouble with quite a few people, so he shot himself.
3. One grape in the 1860's was so sour that he killed the president! No further hint should be needed.

Answer: John Wilkes Booth

That's right, I'm talking about the Lincoln assassination! Lee Harvey Oswald killed President Kennedy 100 years later, and Mary Surratt and David Herold were both co-conspirators in the Lincoln assassination.
4. Which sour president was concerned with a scandal involving a break-in?

Answer: Richard Nixon

President Nixon was involved in a theft from the Watergate Hotel, a Democratic building holding important documents. When it was almost certain he would be impeached, Nixon resigned, being the only president in history to do so. (As of 2011)
5. The Wild West had some notoriously sour grapes. Only one, however, was so sour he killed a man on Christmas Day! Who was this outlaw?

Answer: John Wesley Hardin

John Wesley Hardin was arguably the sourest of all the Old West grapes. The instance described in the question occurred when there was a dispute over a card game, and the two men dueled it out in the streets. Hardin also once shot a man through a hotel room wall because he was snoring too loudly, killing him.
6. After the end of World War II, most people all over the world were pretty sour. But they had nothing on the Japanese. When America bombed Nagasaki and Hiroshima within days of each other, each had killed and each had survivors. How many confirmed cases are there of someone surviving both blasts consecutively?

Answer: 1

There is one known case of a man who was in Hiroshima when the first bomb was dropped, and survived but was burned. He spent the night in Hiroshima, and then returned to his home in Nagasaki, just in time for the second bomb. He died in 2010.
7. This Roman emperor was one of many sour grapes in the emperor occupation. Put in charge while still a teen, his mother often assisted with his duties. This nasty grape saw it as getting in the way, so his solution was arranging to have her murdered. During his reign, the city of Rome was also burned down while he did little to help.

Answer: Nero

One myth states that while the city burned, Nero was in a neighboring city playing the fiddle, but this has been widely rejected, as fiddles hadn't been invented at the time. On one positive note for Nero, once he got back to the burnt down city, he did use his own money to help clean up.
8. This grape was pretty sour early in life, but soon became as sweet as they come. If it weren't for a terrific teacher and a water pump, she may have never gotten past a sour and disabled beginning. Who started out so sour she would abuse her little sister, and became so sweet that she wrote books, met the president, and had a Broadway play based on her life?

Answer: Helen Keller

Helen Keller was born a healthy baby, but soon lost her sight and hearing to an illness, probably Scarlet Fever. At the age of seven, teacher Annie Sullivan arrived, and after many months of trying to teach Helen a hand alphabet, finally broke through with, "water", while water from a pump was splashing on Helen's hands.

She proceeded to receive a formal education, went on to write books, and met every president from Grover Cleveland to Lyndon Johnson. She was also friends with figures such as Alexander Graham Bell, Mark Twain, and Charlie Chaplin. Laura Bridgman was another blind and deaf woman who was educated before Keller, and Patty Duke portrayed Helen Keller in the biographical drama, "The Miracle Worker".
9. Two very sour grapes back in the 1920's were Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow. You probably knew that they had a gang that robbed banks and shot anyone who got in the way. Naturally, they were on the top of the Wanted list, and police all over the country breathed a sigh of relief when they were killed. How did they die?

Answer: Shot by police while driving

Bonnie and Clyde were killed at the same time on May 23, 1934. While driving in an automobile, they were ambushed by several police officers, who shot up to 130 rounds, not stopping even when the car had crashed into a ditch. They were immortalized in popular culture in 1967 film, "Bonnie and Clyde", directed by Arthur Penn, and staring Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty.
10. And now the only question that could possibly wrap up this quiz. The story that the saying, "sour grapes" originated from, is about an animal seeing grapes growing, but they are too high up for him to reach. Annoyed, he says, "They're probably sour grapes anyway." What kind of animal is mentioned in the story?

Answer: Fox

The story, "The Fox and the Grapes", is one of Aesop's Fables. This fable is noted for having only one animal protagonist.
