Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following words is NOT translated from the word "Panzerkampfwagen" which is part of the German tank designations?

Answer: War

Translation: 'Panzerkampfwagen' is a compound consisting of three words put together:

'Panzer' which means 'armour'
'-kampf' which means 'fight(ing)'
'-wagen' which means 'vehicle' ('Wagen' can also mean 'car, automobile')
2. What type of vehicle was the SdKfz 7 (Sonderkraftfahrzeug 7)?

Answer: Halftrack

The SdKfz 7 was a halftrack that was often used to carry an 8.8cm gun along with the crew. It was renowned for its towing ability. There were 4 versions, 1 basic, 2 versions towing anti-aircraft guns, and one version was used to observe V2 rockets.
3. What was the original purpose intended for the Panzer I (Panzerkampfwagen I)?

Answer: Training tank

Originally intended as a training tank, it found its way into frontline service during the Spanish Civil War and the early years of WWII until being converted into the Panzerjäger I -- tank destroyers. It suffered high cassualties in the Polish campaign. There were other specialized versions such as one armed with a flamethrower.
4. The Panzerjäger I was based on the chassis of which tank?

Answer: Panzer I

The Panzerjäger I was based on a modified Panzer I Ausf. B chassis. It was Germany's first "Tank Destroyer". Althought it was cheaper to produce than a Panzer I it had little protection for the crew.
5. What was the size of the gun that the Panzerjäger I was armed with and what country did it come from?

Answer: 47mm Czechoslovakia

It was armed with a Czech 47mm Skoda gun. The Panzerjäger I was much better at dealing with enemy tanks than the Panzer I, after all a 47mm cannon will do more damage to a tank than 2 machine-guns.
6. Originally, on the Panzer III (Panzerkampfwagen III) what was the calibre of the main gun?

Answer: 37mm

Originally the main armament of the Panzer III was a 37mm cannon with later versions being armed with 50mm cannons and even a 75mm cannon. The Panzer III was never equiped with an 88mm cannon.
7. The "Puma" was which type of vehicle?

Answer: Heavy Armoured Car

The SdKfz. 234/2 was called "Puma". It was a heavy armoured car which was armed with a 50mm cannon. One of Germany's best armoured vehicles (one of my favourites) it could easily deal with enemy half tracks and light tanks.
8. The Jagdpanther was based on the chassis of which tank and what size gun did it have?

Answer: Panther/88mm

The Jagdpanther was a German tank destroyer based on the Panther tank chassis. It carried an 8.8cm cannon. Although it is the same caliber main gun of the Tiger, it was a different gun with a longer barrel. Around 392 were built.
9. What was the more common name for the Panzerkampfwagen VIII?

Answer: Maus

The Maus was a prototype tank which weighed 188tons. Only two of these prototypes were ever built.
10. Which tank was often misidentified by Allied troops as a Tiger?

Answer: PzKpfw IV

The Panzer IV (PzKpfw IV) and the Tiger (PzKpfw VI E) had a very similar shape and the later versions of the PzKpfw IV had a longer barrel with a muzzle break making it look even more similar to the Tiger.
