Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Before the concept of the 'tank' matured, many of the great powers around the world had already developed a new invention capable of replacing the cavalry in the reconnaissance role. What was this invention called?

Answer: Armored Car

With more machine guns on the field, using cavalry for reconnaissance was no longer a feasible option. The great powers of Europe therefore arrived at a different solution --- employing cars fitted with armor and perhaps a machine gun.
2. What was the name of the first tank ever completed?

Answer: Little Willie

One of the earliest tank developments, the Little Willie was the first tank to be completed in history. Though it was designed to move across trenches under enemy small arms fire, it was too slow to be effective and so was never produced in large numbers.
3. Which of the following was true regarding the turret of the Renault FT-17?

Answer: It could be rotated 360 degrees

The Renault Ft-17 was in many ways an important early ancestor to the tank designs of the Second World War and later on. It was the first tank to have a fully rotating turret that was mounted directly onto the hull.

The tank can also carry either a 37mm or a machine gun as its main armament.
4. The only German tank to enter into operations during WWI, this cumbersome machine had a ground clearance of only 1.57 inches. What was its name?

Answer: Sturmpanzerwagen A7V

Only 20 A7Vs ever entered service on the German side, and it was primarily built as a response to the appearance of British and French tanks. Ordered in December of 1917, the A7V carried seven machine guns but its engines were unfit for battlefield terrains. As a result, the few vehicles that did saw service often lagged behind the infantry they were supposed to support.
5. The Mark VIII international tank was developed as a result of collaboration between which of the following countries?

Answer: Britain and United States

The Mark VIII was conceived in 1917 jointly by America and Britain to overcome the technical limitations each country possessed on its own. Despite all the optimism for what the tank could possibly bring, the tank never saw service before the war ended.
6. What was the name of the first armored fighting vehicle (tank) developed by the United States?

Answer: Holt Gas Electric

A joint venture between Holt and General Electric, the Holt Gas Electric tank was too heavy to be effective. As a result, only one vehicle was ever built. It carried a single 75mm gun and 2 Browning MGs.
7. Which of the following statements about the British A1E1 tank is false?

Answer: It carried a crew of 26

The A1E1 only carried eight crews, and only one prototype was ever manufactured. However, the chassis and some other features heavily influenced Soviet tank designs during the interwar period.
8. Which of the following statements about the British Mk. V (male) tank is TRUE?

Answer: It only required one driver

Thanks to its epicyclic gearbox, the tank was revolutionary in that it only required on person to drive. A variant of the Mk. IV tank, it was twice as fast and better armed.
9. The Versailles Treaty which concluded the World War I allowed Germany to stockpile only 200 tanks for solely defensive purposes.

Answer: False

The Treaty of Versailles put severe military restrictions on defeated Germany. One of its provisions prohibited Germany from producing and/or stockpiling any tanks and military planes. This did not prevent the German army from getting its hands on this new invention, however. Under Hans von Seeckt, the German army practised with wooden and dummy tanks, and by the time Hitler came to power had become quite skilled in the art.
10. What type of armored vehicle did the Allies employ in the Middle East during and after WW1 to serve in a partisan/nationalism suppression role?

Answer: Armored Cars

The allies found the Armored car to be particularly effective in controlling local rebellions and nationalist violence during their campaigns in the Middle East.
