Answer: Bao Dai

Bao Dai became emperor in 1928, but the French wouldn't let him return until 1932, but he was restricted in his power. During WW II he cooperated with the Japanese, who encouraged him to declare independence in 1945. After the 1964 Geneva Accords he appointed Diem to be premier. In a Diem controlled election, Diem was voted in as president. Bao Dai retuned to France and died in 1997.
Diem was president until he was assasinated in 1963. Ky was premier and Thieu was president in the late sixties and early seventies.

Answer: Madam Nhu

Madam Nhu, born Tran Le Xuan, was the wife of President Diem's brother, Ngo Dinh Nhu. Because Diem wasn't married she was a surrogate 'first lady'. She was very arrogant, ultra conservative on social and moral issues and was given the name 'Dragon Lady'.

She issued several decrees banning divorce, dancing, and beauty contests. She even had her own paramilitary called the Women's Solidarity Movement. She was in the US during the coup of 1963 after which she went into exile in Rome.

General Abrams took over after Westmoreland; General Ridgeway was in the Korean War and General Taylor had been Ambassador to South Vietnam under President Johnson.

Ngo Dinh Diem, Nguyên Cao Ky and Nguyên Van Thieu were all leaders of South Vietnam. It was Vo Nguyên Giap who defeated the French at Dien Bien Phu in 1954.

Walt was a Marine Corps officer. Sharp was CINCPAC (Commander in Chief, Pacific) during part of the war. Simmons was a Special Forces colonel who led the Son Tay Prison raid in 1970 to free American POWs.

The picture was taken by Associated Press photographer Eddie Adams on February 1, 1968. In an era before satellite phone and email still photos could be most easily transmitted back to the US for timely appearence in newspapers. Unfortunately, people often saw a picture without the context of live coverage.

Duong Van Minh was the leader of the coup that ousted President Diem, after which he took control of both the government and the military. He was overthrown in a matter of months. In 1975, Minh become the leader of South Vietnam after Nguyên Van Thieu resigned as president and fled the country.

Dean was the US Ambassador when the Khmer Rouge took control of Cambodia. He left about one week before the fall. Martin and Bunker were both ambassadors to South Vietnam. Colby was involved with CIA operations during the war.

Ernest Medina was Calley's commanding officer. WO Hugh Thompson, Jr. was the helicopter pilot who intervened at My Lai. Pvt. Dennis Conti was a soldier in Calley's platoon.
