Answer: Daniel Emmett

Emmett was one of the originators of the black face minstrel shows. He wrote the song in New York City.
3. What battle took place March 8, 1862?

Answer: Pea Ridge

Union troops advanced against CSA Gen. Van Dorn and won a significant victory. Union losses about 1200 men, CSA about 1800 men.

Answer: True

The Union authorized corps badges in May 1863. The CSA never did initiate this system. Early in the war Gen. Jackson orderded his troops to tie strips of white cloth around their hats to identify them as friends to others CSA troops.

Root wrote 28 Civil War songs. The song was inspired after he read Pres. Lincoln's proclamation calling for troops. The song was published in August 1862.

After his graduation in 1846 he was commissioned a 2nd LT. and sent to an artillery unit fighting in the Mexican War.

Fought May 12, 1865 in Texas. CSA victory but no bearing on the outcome of the War.

48th Pa. was composed of coal miners under Col. Pleasants who was a mining engineer. On July 30 at 0430 hrs a 170-foot section on the CSA entrenchments erupted.
9. What Union regiment was at the front on the assault on Battery Wagner at Morris Island?

Answer: 54th Mass.

Led by Col. Robert Shaw, they lost 272 men out of 600.
10. The "Hornets' Nest" was part of which battle?

Answer: Shiloh

The CSA made 12 charges against Gen. Prentiss's division and were repulsed each time. Although he held the CSA off he was forced to order a cease-fire and surrender his 2200 men.
