Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You were gleeful as you watched your country of San Marino become independent of a vast empire. What, allegedly, was that empire that you broke free of -- the one that discriminated against you?

Answer: Roman Empire

Legend has it that San Marino broke free from the Roman Empire after Saint Marinus went there from the Croatian island of Rab. He officially made San Marino a country on September 3, 301. Being in an inaccessible location, sovereignty was maintained throughout its existence, with only short interruptions.
2. It was 297 A.D, and your country's founding father, Saint Marinus, was fleeing discrimination. He was trying to set up a new city-state. What mountain did he set San Marino up on?

Answer: Monte Titano

Saint Marinus was persecuted because he was a Christian. In order to flee the discrimination from the Romans, he went to Monte Titano, set up a church, and eventually created the Republic of San Marino as we know it today. Monte Titano is 2,425 feet high and today is the highest point in San Marino.
3. "Being a tiny nation was no easy task during the 1600s," you thought to yourself, "when a country that small was at risk of getting invaded at any time." To counter this, San Marino signed a treaty of protection with what Pope in 1602?

Answer: Pope Clement VIII

Pope Clement VIII is best known for setting up the Congregatio de Auxiliis, which was set up to debate free will and grace among Dominicans and Jesuits. Although he signed the Treaty of Protection with San Marino in 1602, it was not put into force until 1631, 26 years after Clement VIII's death.
4. "Oh no!" you thought as you saw an army on the horizon. San Marino's sovereignty was being threatened and the year was 1797. What European power was forcing San Marino to arrest Monsignor Vincenzo Ferretti or face being invaded?

Answer: France

Napoleon's army first reached San Marino in 1797. When he issued the ultimatum, San Marino stated that they would do the best they could to arrest the Monsignor, while in reality they helped him flee. Due to their ingenious diplomatic relations with the French, however, they retained their sovereignty and became friends with them.
5. The year was 1915 and World War I was raging throughout Europe. You saw the mass destruction happening in neighboring Italy. Italy had just declared war on Austria-Hungary, but what did San Marino do?

Answer: Stayed neutral

Despite pressure from Italy to join the Allied Powers, San Marino remained neutral during the entirety of World War I. This came at a price, however, as Italy suspended telephone communications with San Marino during the war. Despite San Marino's neutrality, twenty Sammarinese people joined the Allied side as volunteers for Italy.
6. World War I came to a close, and you saw the Sammarinese people rejoicing peace again. San Marino had successfully maintained its sovereignty for over 1600 years. After World War I, what political ideology did your government embrace?

Answer: Fascism

The Sammarinese Fascist Party was led by Giuliano Gozi, one of the twenty World War I veterans from San Marino. The party dominated Sammarinese politics for twenty years, but was dissolved in 1944. After their decline, the Communist-Socialist party of San Marino took power.
7. You couldn't believe your eyes when you saw what happened. The year was 1944, right in the middle of World War II. A devastating military force had bombed San Marino, destroying your railway and killing sixty-three civilians. What country bombed your people and devastated your country?

Answer: Britain

The Royal Air Force bombed San Marino on June 26, 1944, mistakenly thinking it had been invaded by Germany. They issued a formal apology after the fact, saying it was done mistakenly when they thought Germany was using it as a storage facility for ammunition.
8. It is 1959. In your country's elections, the Christian Democratic Party and the Independent Democratic Social Party gained seats in the Grand and General Council while the Communist and Socialist parties lost seats in the council. What else happened in San Marino in this year, extending its citizens' rights?

Answer: Women's suffrage

San Marino was one of the last European countries to give women the right to vote. Liechtenstein, however, did it later, in 1984. The Social Democratic Party was a new party that first got seats in the 1955 election. It gained seven seats in 1959 to get a total of nine seats.
9. "We're part of something," you thought when you saw your country join the United Nations on March 2, 1992. Which one of these former Soviet countries did NOT join the United Nations on the same day as San Marino?

Answer: Georgia

Georgia joined the United Nations approximately five months later on July 31, 1992. Nine nations in total joined the United Nations on March 2, 1992: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, San Marino, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
10. In 2004, you watched with glee as San Marino's national football (soccer) team won its first game ever. Against what other European microstate was this win?

Answer: Liechtenstein

San Marino defeated Liechtenstein 1-0. Andy Selva was the man who scored the winning goal for San Marino. No yellow or red cards were given in that game. Unfortunately, this game was a friendly match, so it didn't count in the standings.
