Answer: Lt. Colonel

He was only a Lt. Colonel even though the battle and stories indicate he was a General. He was promoted to a Brevet Maj. Gen.in 1864. In 1866 he accepted the rank of Lt.Col, of the 7th cavalry. A Brevet promotion to an officer was meaningless in terms of actual authority.
2. What type pistol did "Billy the Kid" carry?

Answer: Colt .41 cal.

His choices of weapons were the Winchester 1873 carbine and the Colt "Thunderer" .41 cal. double-action revolver.
3. What was 'Billy the Kid's" birth name?

Answer: Henry McCarty

He was born Henry McCarty sometime in 1859 in the Irish slums of New York City. His mother later married a man named William Antrim and he adopted his step-father's surname.
4. What Chief was the leader of the Nez Perce tribe in the 1870's?

Answer: Chief Joseph

The Nez Perce inhabited the areas in Oregon. They moved East when threatened by expanding white settlements. They were pursued by the Army while trying to reach Montana where they were cornered after a 5 day siege. After a battle Chief Joseph said "I will fight no more forever" and surrendered.

When Tunstall was killed Billy swore to get some of the men who killed Tunstall.(Lincoln County War) In 1892 the cattlemen again formed the Regulators to stop a conflict with settlers and sheepherders over grazing land.(Johnson County War)

He battled the Army to a standstill in 1868. He also forced the Army to close the Bozeman Trail and abandon three forts.

In about April 1889 it was announced that a huge part of area would be open for those wishing to stake a claim. About 50,000 people showed up on the designated day to stake their claim and raced for the best land.

Answer: Fort Phil Kearny

He decoyed 80 soldiers under the command of Captain Fetterman out of the fort by attacking a wood train from the fort. Fetterman was ordered not to cross the ridge beyond the fort but disobeyed the order. He and his command were wiped out.
9. What railroad appointed 6 men to go after the "Hole in the Wall Gang"?

Answer: Union Pacific

Due to all the attention Butch and his gang gave the Union Pacific they appointed six lawmen to track the gang down.
10. How did a man get to be a U.S. Marshal?

Answer: Appointed by President

All marshals were appointed by the President. The most common badge worn by them was a 6 pointed star.
