Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bill was born in Iowa in 1846. What was his birth name?

Answer: William Frederick Cody

William "Bill" Cody was born in the United States but early in his childhood his parents, Isaac and Mary Cody, moved the family to Canada.
2. William Cody worked at many jobs in the course of his life. Which one of these is NOT a job he held?

Answer: Governor

Bill started working at an early age. At 14 he became a Pony Express rider; later he became a scout and hunter for the US Army, but probably he was most famous for his "Wild West Show" which gave many Americans a taste of what the "real" West was like.

In 1872, while Cody was with the US Army, he was awarded a Metal of Honor for gallantry in action as a civilian scout for the 3rd Calvary Regiment. In 1917 Congress revoked 911 medals that did not fit the new guidelines they implemented. Cody's was among them but in 1989 his and four others were reinstated.
3. Besides Bill, William Cody had another nickname. What was it?

Answer: Buffalo Bill

Cody earned the nickname from his success as a buffalo scout and hunter. This name was already being claimed by another wild west man, Bill Comstock, so Cody and Comstock organized a "shoot off" to decide the rightful owner of the name "Buffalo Bill". Legend states that Cody won the contest by shooting 69 buffalo to Comstock's 48.

Answer: Dam

Even though he did not see his plan come to fruition, Buffalo Bill had an early interest in irrigation. In the late 19th century he and a partner had acquired water rights to the Shoshone River to irrigate about 170,000 acres. Congress changed the name of a dam located at Cody to honor him.

Answer: January 10, 1917

William Buffalo Bill Cody died of kidney failure on January 10, 1917 in Denver, Colorado and is buried in Golden, Colorado. Part of his family wished for him to be buried in Golden but some wanted him to be buried in Cody, Wyoming (the town he founded).
10. Where is the Scouts Rest Ranch located?

Answer: Nebraska

Scout's Rest Ranch, located in North Platte, Nebraska is a State Historical Site where you can visit a home and barn built by Buffalo Bill. The barn still has playbills from his "Wild West Show" hung by Cody himself.
