1. Which countries fought in the War of 1812?

Answer: Britain and the United States

Well, Canada was British at the time and the feeling in the United States was that many in Canada would welcome a change. Britain had been annoying the United States for some time and they felt disrespected and so it was game on.
2. Forsyth County, North Carolina is named after a captain in the First Regiment of United States Riflemen who fought in many of the battles along the St. Lawrence River and in the Niagara Peninsula during the War of 1812. What was his name?

Answer: Benjamin Forsyth

Benjamin Forsyth led an elite group of sharpshooters in many a battle with the Redcoats during the war; his is a great story.
3. What were the two Canada's called at the time of the war?

Answer: Upper and Lower Canada

Most of the French speaking people in Canada were in Lower Canada and a few were in Upper Canada.
4. What was the name of modern day Toronto in 1812?

Answer: York

York was the scene of a US victory as this small muddy town on a great natural harbor was overrun by a superior force who made a successful amphibious landing to the west of the town.
5. What great falls between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario had carved a gorge at the site where some major battles were fought?

Answer: Niagara Falls

Two forts faced each other at the mouth of the Niagara Gorge: Fort Niagara on the US side and Fort George on the Canadian side duked it out with the Americans winning once again.
6. La Colle Mill was the site of two American defeats. It was a small mill with thick walls on the La Colle River and should have been easy pickings but wasn't. What would you have done to overcome this thorn in the side?

Answer: Brought heavy cannon to pierce the thick walls of the mill

Well I guess heavy cannon would be a good choice but the roads weren't so good in that neighborhood and it was difficult to get them in place. The Americans tried but the crafty British had covered the road to the mill with fallen trees and attacked what cannons were brought. The Americans didn't have rockets.
7. Newark (now known as Niagara on the Lake, Ontario), met a catastrophic end near the end of the war and led to the British burning Washington. What happened?

Answer: The town was burned by departing US militia

The burning of Newark was condemned by both sides and the residents were turned out in the freezing cold to fend for themselves. The town was eventually rebuilt and is a tourist attraction today.
8. British soldiers typically wore a color that lent a name to them. What would they have been called by their American foes?

Answer: Red coats

The red coats of the British unfortunately made them easy targets in the woods of Canada.

Answer: shako

The shako was a tall cylindrical hat often decorated with a plume on the front and unit identification. Think West Point.
10. Which American general was the victor at the Battle of New Orleans?

Answer: Andrew Jackson

There is a great song about the Battle of New Orleans. The battle really wasn't necessary, though, as the Treaty of Ghent had already been signed and the War was over. News travelled slowly in those days.

Answer: Halifax

The battle between the Shannon and the Chesapeake was a morale booster for the Royal Navy which had seen a number of defeats on the high seas by superior US ships. Halifax was one of the great fortresses of North America and a fine natural harbor.

Answer: Laura Secord

Laura Secord and her husband overheard plans to attack the British as they served dinner to American officers quartered in their home. With her husband unable to travel, Laura trekked twenty miles through swamps and over hill and dale to warn the British. Now Canadians eat chocolates named in her honor.

Answer: Captain Runchey's Company of Coloured Men

Richard Pierpoint, a freed African American, persuaded the British military to accept a contigent of African Americans within a specially formed militia unit. Captain Runchy, a tavern owner was named as their commander. They performed well and remained a unit for the remaainder of the war.
14. Master Commandant Thomas Macdonough won a great battle for the USA near the end of the war. For what battle is he known?

Answer: The Battle of Lake Champlain

The battle for Plattsburgh ocurred near the end of the war and the British had been much reinforced by veterans from the war with Napoleon. A large army marched to attack Plattsburgh in the Champlain Valley but on losing the battle for domination of the lake, turned for home. Macdonough was awarded hero status for winning the Battle of Lake Champlain.
15. Who was the President of the United States of America at the time of the War of 1812?

Answer: James Madison

James Madison, father of the US Constitution, held office during the War of 1812 and actually led the army in the field in the defence of Washington, the only President to do so.
