Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On one side of the war were the Americans. Who were they fighting against?

Answer: Canadiens, British, and Natives

All three of these groups united against the American forces, driving them back in the United States. Obviously the British were the main force, but if either the Natives (especially the Shawnee led by Tecumseh) or the Canadiens had not participated then the Americans would have likely won.

Note: "Canadiens" refers to people of French descent living in Quebec, "Canadians" refers to a citizen of Canada.
2. Which of the following acts was one of the chief causes of The War of 1812?

Answer: Navigation Act

The Navigation Act stated that the British could board any ship that might be trading with France. The British were fighting the Napoleonic Wars at the time, and did not want the French to receive trade from anyone. The Stamp Act, Royal Proclamation, and Tea Tax were all enacted when America was still a British colony.

These all were major causes of the American Revolution - not the War of 1812, which came more than 30 years later.
3. Which of the following American areas was particularly unenthusiastic about the War of 1812?

Answer: New England

The New England states stayed neutral throughout the war, one of the key disadvantages for the invading Americans.
4. Tecumseh was a fiery native chief that had a deep hatred for the Americans, for they had killed his father and brother. From what tribe was Tecumseh?

Answer: Shawnee

Tecumseh was a Shawnee Chief who nearly succeeded in uniting all native tribes from the Great Lakes to Florida. However, the confederation ultimately failed after his brother "The Prophet" disobeyed Tecumseh's orders and attacked, then lost to, the Americans at the battle of Tippecanoe.
5. At what battle did Tecumseh die?

Answer: Moraviantown

Tecumseh was killed at Moraviantown, while fighting a rearguard action against the Americans. His body was never found afterwards, and there is nothing marking the place where he died.
6. Major-General Sir Isaac Brock was considered the "Saviour of Upper Canada" after his brilliant victory at Detroit. Unfortunately for the British, he died at this battle.

Answer: Queenston Heights

Brock died at Queenston Heights trying the defend largest British cannon that was atop the cliffs. After his death, the remainder of his men staged a heroic charge while shouting "Avenge the General!"
7. Which of the following soldiers became famous at the Battle of Chateauguay?

Answer: Charles de Salaberry

Charles de Salaberry was the man in charge of a few hundred Canadian and British soliders and villagers who defeated 2000 American soldiers who were trying to get to Montreal. William Harrison and William Hull were both American Generals who were nowhere near the battle, and John Chrysler was a young man who had a major battle fought on his farm.
8. Which battle is considered to be the bloodiest of the war?

Answer: Lundy's Lane

The Battle of Lundy's Lane occured on July 25, 1814. Two evenly matched armies faced each other in nearly 12 hours of hand-to-hand combat, resulting in over 900 casualties on each side.
9. Where was the final battle of the War of 1812 fought, and in what year?

Answer: New Orleans - 1815

The final battle of the war actually occured two weeks after the Treaty of Ghent was signed to stop the war (the British were unaware that peace had been concluded when they attacked New Orleans). The treaty was signed on December 24, 1814, and the battle of New Orleans was fought on January 8, 1815.
10. What treaty ended the War of 1812?

Answer: Treaty of Ghent

The Treaty of Ghent was signed on December 24, 1814.
