Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Shortly before the outbreak of World War II, Germany and the Soviet Union signed a non-aggression treaty. Things changed, however, in 1941 when Germany invaded the Soviet Union. Perhaps King Frederick would know, but what was the code name for this invasion?

Answer: Barbarossa

This campaign was the most costly of any during World War Two--with over 800,000 Axis military casualties and 4 million Soviet military casualties for 1941 alone. When the entire Eastern Front is considered for the whole of World War II, the total military and civilian casualties was well over 20,000,000.

At one point, 75% of Germany's military force was involved. As with Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812 during the Napoleonic words, the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941 would ultimately prove a turning point in the war.
2. Instead of the shorter crossing from Dover to Calais, Allied forces starting from southern Britain chose to launch an amphibious assault that landed in Normandy in 1944. Sounding as if someone important was in charge, what was the code name for this invasion?

Answer: Overlord

The famed D-Day (June 6, 1944) was a part of this larger operation. There were five beaches where Allied forces initially landed: US forces at Utah and Omaha, British forces at Sword and Gold and Canadian forces at Juno. "The Longest Day" and "Saving Private Ryan" are two movies that provide a look at this invasion.
3. Early in the war, Allied forces were seemingly trapped at the French port of Dunkirk. Though wars are not won by retreats, to invoke Winston Churchill, it certainly required quite a bit of power to evacuate hundreds of thousands of troops in 1940. What was the code name for this operation?

Answer: Dynamo

Churchill also described this operation as a "miracle of deliverance". Hundreds of civilian ships provided emergency assistance to the naval craft that evacuated the soldiers. Much of the equipment, unfortunately needed to be left behind.
4. The first operation in which soldiers from the United States took a major role was the Allied invasion of Morocco and Tunisia in 1942. If you're fired up, you might know its name. What was the code name of this invasion?

Answer: Torch

Operation Torch was sometimes also called Operation Gymnast. It was seen as an alternate plan to the "second front" that the Soviet Union wanted in Europe in order to relieve pressure from the German invasion of the Soviet Union. There was also hope to bring Vichy France to the Allied side.
5. In 1942, German occupation of Vichy France ended its status as a nominally independent state. The idea for the operation was based on an earlier plan known as Operation Attila. What was the code name of the operation that was used in 1942?

Answer: Anton

Vichy France was essentially southern France excluding land near the Atlantic coast. In part, German occupation was a response to Vichy France scuttling its navy rather than allowing it to fall under German control. Operation Anton included German and Italian military forces.
6. In 1940, much of Europe lay under German control. Plans were created to invade Britain but were not carried out. Roar if you know the answer. What was the code name for this operation?

Answer: Sea Lion

The last successful military invasion of Britain occurred in 1066--the Norman invasion. Operation Sea Lion depended in part on German control of the skies between Germany and Britain. The aerial Battle of Britain in 1940 was an attempt to do this.
7. The D-Day invasion of June 1944 is well known. It is less well known that there was also an Allied invasion of southern France later in 1944. What was the code name for this military operation?

Answer: Dragoon

Early versions of this plan referred to it as Operation Anvil when the D-Day invasion was called Operation Sledgehammer. The invading force was primary American and French forces. The aerial and amphibious operation began in August 1944.
8. Seemingly in an instant the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor in 1941 changed American opinion into support US involvement in World War II. What letter was the code name for this operation?

Answer: Z

The premise behind the attack was to limit the ability of the United States to participate in World War II. Instead, the attack brought the United States into the war a few days later in an almost unanimous declaration. Japanese Admiral Hara Tadaichi said "We have won a great tactical victory at Pearl Harbor and thereby lost the war."
9. During the German invasion of the Soviet Union this operation in 1942 was a final push to capture the city of Leningrad. I'm not sure if the Aurora Borealis played a role or not. What was the code name of this attack?

Answer: Northern Light

This attack was coordinated to occur at about the same time as the German attacks on Stalingrad to the south. By this point, German forces had been attempting to capture the city for almost a year. After it failed, the German did not launch another attempt to capture Leningrad.

The full siege of Leningrad lasted over 28 months (1941-1944)--one of the longest and most deadly in human history with well over 1,000,000 lives lost.
10. This was an operation that was never carried out. Following a strategy of island hopping during the war, the Allies planned a amphibious assault on the Japanese home islands in 1945-1947, which it was hoped would bring World War II to a conclusion. What was the code name for this planned invasion?

Answer: Downfall

The planning divided the invasion into two further parts: Operation Olympic and Operation Coronet. Having seen that capturing of islands like Iwo Jima and Okinawa had cost thousands of lives, Allied leaders felt that an invasion of Japan itself could involve an even larger number of casualties. This argument supported the use of atomic weapons against Japan in August 1945.
